Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition

no SFX, no voice, only music - windows 10
i'm having a problem. when i start the game everything is fine, but when i click the door to go to the atrium in vault 101, all other sound gets disabled and what sounds like the menu music is all i can hear. i've played all the way till i escape the vault and the problem persists after i load out into the open world, only the music changes.

i've tried a fresh install, tried uninstalling all external codecs, then tried installing klite codecs. i run it in compatibility mode for xpSP3 and as administrator. i feel like its a windows 10 issue but i cant find much information on it.

i had tried using mods initially, i had FOMM and FOSE, the unnoficial patch, NMC textures, and felout. i deleted the whole game and redownloaded it to see if a fresh install would help but it didnt. i'm now running a clean install and still having this problem

just loaded a save from right before the atrium door, i turned on a radio station and when i went through the sound was okay. but when i exited the vault into the wasteland it happened again. not sure if that helps

same issue here I have never find a solution.
I've been playing the game without sound and with music only.

Check your sound setting, you want to run it at 16 bit 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) and that normally works.
Right click your speaker, select sounds to bring up the sound panel.
Under Playback, double click your speakers, select the advanced tab and set it there. Apply and that should fix it for you.
I just noticed, this was from 2015, old thread.

If i did this and i had it set to that and it didn't fix the issue, what should i do?

You can add the k-lite codec pack and see if that fixes the issue.
It was an older fix for sound related issues, but no one seems to mention it much nowadays.
https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
I still use it and have never had any sound issues with the game.

Have you installed DX9 to your system also?

Also remember to do a full system restart for the changes to take full effect.

hi. hate to say this, but this also did not fix it. D::steambored: it only has full sound for about 3 minutes before it all cuts besides the radio.

Try this one last thing.
Look up Driver Booster on steam store.
Download the free version and install it to your account.
Should come up under tools in your game library.
Run it and update your drivers, hopefully there will be a sound driver update.
After it updates your drivers restart the system and try the game again to see if the issue is fixed.

i did this, did a restart, and now the game crashes after i press play on the game launcher ):

So then it is a driver issue, use Driver Booster to roll back the driver then download the manufacturer driver. If it's an onboard download it from the mainboard driver site.
That should then correct the issue. It should list what the hardware type was so you can get the name for the driver software to lookup.
