Fallout 3 detecting wrong Video Card?
I have a Nvidia GTX 650 but fallout 3 tells me it detects a Geforce 7900 GS card. Whilst when i launch NV and F04 it detects the correct card. I've done a clean install twice and i still face this problem. Note: Yes i've installed some mods. A Texture mod, Unofficial patch, and a sprint mod if that helps.

Sounds like you installed the fake d3d9.dll file which you don't need. If there is a file called d3d9.dll in the FO3 installation directory try renaming it and see if that fixes it.

Thank you sir, that has fixed the problem

Renaming it for what name?

if you see a d3d9.dll file in the Fallout 3 installation directory it's a workaround file used to trick FO3 into thinking your GPU is a Geforce 7900 GS. This is only useful for people who have an Intel HD iGPU so people who have a different GPU don't need the file in their FO3 installation directory.

It can be renamed anything e.g. "d3d9.dll.bak" or even removed entirely.

Necro Bump!
I just installed Fallout 3 GOTY on my Windows 10 laptop with Intel HD Graphics 530 & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M. I wanted to share with everyone what I did to get the game working perfect for me. (Some of this was copied from several sources to get where I am.)

1. Open your Fallout 3 installation folder.
2. Right click on Fallout 3 in steam--properties-- local files-- browse local files.
3. Right click on Fallout3 file > Properties > Compatibility > click the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for: then select windows XP (service pack 3) > click "Run as administrator."
4. Right click on FalloutLauncher > Properties > Compatibility > click the box "Run as administrator".
5. Download Windows live marketplace via this link or Google search for "windows live download". https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=201134
6. Install the gfwlivesetup that you downloaded in the previous step. No need to run the program after you install it.
7. This seemed to allow the game to actually launch but I still had issues when I clicked Play in the main menu. Also, in the Fallout 3 Options menu, I didn't see my GTX 970M video card in the menu at all, just the Intel Graphics 530 adapter.
8. Browse to the folder Documents\My Games\Fallout3 and delete the file "FalloutPrefs".

Hope everything works now!

I just found an easy solution for Windows 11. Go to System-Display-Graphics, after that you should be able to see "Custom options for apps". Click browse and find Fallout 3 Launcher and Fallout 3 itself. Add them both to the list, then click on one and select "Options". Choose the option that lists your graphics card, usually under "High Performance". Presto, vualà, Fallout 3 will launch!

Oh my god. THANK YOU. I’ve spent the part three hours trying to get this game to launch and was about to give up and return it after trying a dozen other suggestions that were way more complicated.
