Once you defused the bomb in Megaton you get a house there. You can also store stuff in some of the trunks in Rivet City's common room.

You really don't need to store a whole lot in this game, because everything you need will drop as you go for repair and upgrades. I would definatly put as many points into repair as soon as possible. You don't need caps, the market in this game is completely useless. Even if you're going for all positive karma and never stealing, you'll find enough supplies as you go to sustain everything you do.

That said, unlike Skyrim, most all indoor containers are safe. No one in this game steals anything like in Skyrim and nothing resets. I went back to a place I had been about two hours into the game and I remembered thinking I would need that extra chinese assault rifle for repairs later... that was hours and hours later and I had picked up plenty of them for repair and probably let thirty more chinese assault rifles lay on the ground since that time.

Best talent in the game, imho, is the Scrounger perk (more ammo in containers). Get is as soon as it's unlocked. Use most all of your caps to buy up ammo and stimpaks as ammo has no weight. Every time you see a bed that you can sleep in, sleep and save the stimpaks. Do the wasteland guide quests from Moira and make sure you get over 600 rads.. when she heals you you'll get a special ability to heal broken bones when you have high rads from that point on. As long as you don't get 'extreme' with your rads, you'll only get minor debuffs from it, so keep your rads fairly high and you'll regenrate when you can't find a bed.

Additionally, you get the follower from the brotherhood of steel who can packmule for you just like followers in Skyrim. I got my house in megaton and used it two times. Once to sleep after a fast travel when I first got it and once to place all my bobblehead toys on the display thing.

The Fallout 3 wiki probably has the best list:
