FOSE with GOTY
I need some help getting FOSE to work with the GOTY edition. I have used the fallout anniversary patcher and am launching from the fallout 3.exe not the fose launcher. The screen loads black and then exits right away. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you need fose for a mod you are trying to use?
If so then you would have to load from the fose exe, otherwise if you aren't running any mods that require it, you really don't need it or the anniversary patcher downgrade to run it.

This guide will help with other things to check and it works with or without the patcher and fose.

the fallout anniversary patcher explicitly states to not load from the fose.exe and to load from the fallout 3.exe after patching. Yes, I need fose for a few mods.

Really? Well not sure how that works guess he altered the exe to hook the fose.exe but it has to still be installed in the game folder. And are you running any mods that need fose?

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/24913?tab=description fallout anniversary patch for reference. The mods I am using are a sprint mod and graphical enhancement mod that both require fose. This did not seem to be a problem two years ago.

Well 2 years ago it was different, you ran it from the fose exe with the patcher installed, he must have updated it and changed the startup. But did you run it from steam and set your hardware settings first? FOSE won't run unless you have run the normal launcher first and setup the game hardware

yes, i ran the launcher first to get into the game and have settings set before modifying any of the game with mods and fose. Currently all mods are disabled and uninstalled while I try to get just FOSE to work. I am on a win 11 pc, amd 5800x, rtx 3080, 32gb ram, game installed on ssd.

check the guide then it works with the patcher but also goes over setting for windows so it selects the right gpu to use. Plus how to update the ini's and patch the fose for 4gb. If you use the anniversary patcher alone it still uses the old ini and fose isn't set to 4gb.
It's not a german version is it?

the anniversary patcher does multiple things. Per the nexus page it states it sets it to LAA (4gb patch), downgrades to 1.7.0.3 for compatibility with fose and sets it to automatically launch fose when launching the fallout.exe. I have an amd system, there is no internal gpu on amd cpus. I only have 1 available graphics card.

Ya but it doesn't update the ini's you use the normal ones the launcher generates, you would need to update them. And it only patches the game exe for laa not the fose exe. But check the comment from the author on the guide for using an amd. It says to copy you d3d9 from your windows folder and set the gpu to high performance in the windows settings. You're from the states so it's not a german version so wouldn't be a gfwl thing, but could be the d3d9.dll issue. Have you installed directx9 in windows 11?
Here's a video for doing that.
https://youtu.be/yMNVLoxD8fQ
It has download links on the video for the dx9
Works for win11 too

I copied the comment from the guide here's what it says

""The fix below will use your own d3d9.dll from the windows OS and should work as a graphics bypass.

Goto C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Copy the d3d9.dll and paste a copy in the game folder
(Copy/Paste - Do Not Move the original file)

Steam: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 (goty)
GOG: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout 3
Epic Games: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English

Try running the game and check it.
If not get back to me and I can try to help out further.
