Edit: oh crap i thought this was the fallout new vegas discussions. The comment below explains it.
You just need to make sure it's enabled in Data Files from the launcher when launching the game.
I can't remember if you need to load a save from before your character enters the part of the Memorial with the Project Purity control room or not.
Exactly as Bondage said but you dont need to load a previous save. Just activate the purifier, then go trough the ending and afterwards it will automatically say 2 weeks later and you start the DLC itself.
The story is just a massive bs tbh. still a forever nostalgic game and a great one,but the storyline is just meh....i mean the player caracther should die if they choose to activate the purifier for themselfs but somehow they survive, however all other humans that do it die. Power Armor should protect you long enough...but no. Also in several playtroughs i sent fawkes or charon when they were my companions and the game continued fine afterwards, you still get knocked out and go for the ending and you wake up in the citadel sometime later.
With broken Steele installed the story should continue for you.
Yep thats pretty much it
You need the Broken Steel DLC.
In the original game that's exactly what happened. At the end you sacrifice yourself for the salvation of all mankind. Not exactly a new story, but an actual story with pedigree. See the New Testament or The Omega Man for examples. Next you got an epilogue describing how your actions in the game ended up affecting all your companions.
But all the unwashed heathens demanded otherwise, so they made Broken Steel. And they haven't managed a decent story or ending since.
