Safe storage containers/player houses?
My current "home" is a couple of ammo boxes in Fort Bannister. So far all my stuff hasn't disappeared...yet, but I know I'm going to need an actual safe storage house pretty soon.

The thing is, according to a quick search, literally the only player home in the entire capital Wasteland is a house in Megaton. Is this true? Are there any other options?

There are actually 3 player houses in the game. You can get either megaton house or tenpenny tower suite by doing the nuke quest. Another one is part of the point lookout dlc called Kenny’s cave. So in the base game there is 2 ( but only one you can get depending on who you side with). And if you don’t want get a house you can always get a hotel for a lot cheaper in a town like rivet city.
Is that seriously all?

When completed, Mothership is also "safe" storage (i guess every1 has GOTY edition with DLCs these days).

Unfortunately yes. I don’t really think Bethesda put much thought into ownable houses until Skyrim came around. Although there are a lot of mods that add player homes to the game, I’d suggest checking those out.
^More like forgot about them since there were plenty in their older games. So many houses in Daggerfall I forgot where I live. In Morrowind you could just kill any houses occupants and live there (any objects stored would get a stolen flag unfortunatly), though there was faction housing. Oblivion had one in each city and a couple added by DLC.
