[Spoilers] I found my dad and I am not sure if I was supposed to
So after talking to moriarty he told me something about a radio station. Naturally, being a Bethesda game, I skipped the main quest and started doing other stuff. Eventually after exploring the metro, I found a package that had to be delivered to Girdershade. Talked to the npcs, and then I headed north to do some looting. And I found this weird Garage called "Smith Casey" or something, and turns out it's another vault. I did the quest there and FOUND MY DAD. Now, I haven't played that many bethesda games, but something tells me I wasn't supposed to meet him that early in the game. Wasn't I supposed to visit that radio station first? Is this a bug or something?

No this is not a bug. You can find your dad at any point in the game after vault 101. The only impact it has outside of progression in the main plot is you have to face the supermutant attack on GNR alone. You can still get credit for the footsteps quest by talking to threedog and you can still do the related quest to get the radio dish. The only major downside is that you cannot get the fatman and mini nukes that normally spawn.

Still as long as you are at a low level the fight isnt too hard. You can cheese the gaint by sneaking near the door and letting the other mutants weaken it or climbing rubble to get to a spot it cant reach you.

You can do this, you can skip alot of this, many veterans of the game do this so they dont have to do some of the "boring parts" but I still advise you to go to GNR aka the radio station, you will get some good loot and XP

Alright, I guess I will go to the previous save before entering the vault, I want to get the most out of the game. Thanks for the help to both of you!
