Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition

PSA-Get the GOG version.
Now before anyone jumps on me let me just say that this isn't a pro gog anti steam thread as most of my games come from steam and will most likely continue to but the fact is that the GOG version of FO3 works without having to do any extra work. The GOG version is optimized for newer systems and comes packaged with more memory access and no need for that Windows Live crap, however to my knowledge it doesn't come with the Unofficial Patches so you might wanna still grab those. So yeah I have nothing against Steam itself but if you're thinking about getting this and don't wanna do a bunch of workarounds get the GOG version.

It's fine to be Pro-GOG in this case. Valve have demonstrated they don't care about their customers by neglecting to update Fallout 3 (and New Vegas) as GOG did.

I agree here, if I had know about the GOG version, I would have gotten that version instead of the crappy version on Steam.

Nah, GOG sucks.

I think I'll also get New Vegas there as well. I also really recommend this mod, it automatically makes separate savefiles every 5 minutes or so so you have older saves to fall back on if a savefile gets corrupted and you won't lose hours of gameplay as it automatically makes a new save every 5 minutes. You need Fallout 3 script extender though.

I tried, but my bank automatically denied the transaction because they're based in Europe, and then I found out keys bought from Humble Bundle only work on Steam.

Who do you bank with? And I didn't even get a key, after I paid for it it was just ready for download. I used paypal so maybe you should try that.

I had heard about the gog version but didnt put much research into it (already got the game on dozens of machines & it works fine). Glad to hear about these optimizations though, & more memory access? do you mean its a legit 64bit.exe now?

edit: I searched around, as far as i can tell the GOG version game.exe isnt rewritten, they only made it LAA (which anyone can do in the past). I can't find any other "optimizations" they've done other than remove GFWL, but the steam version doesnt have GFWL either & people were using programs to remove that &/or steam years ago too...sorry, but im not seeing a whole lot of difference rite now other than it being a little premodded.

Either way, I would have to agree, the gog version is likely the best form of the game currently. Fallout 3 can be somewhat unstable, cutting out extra clients like GFWL, Steam, ect takes some load off it. LAA helps too & i've used this in the past as well. but be warned, all that does is flag a single line in the exe to use more memory, the game itself was not developed around this. So it can be prone to destabilize again overtime.

No, it's not 64-bit as I don't think that's even possible. What I mean is they patched the game to make it use 4 gigs of memory instead of 2. Yes I know you can do all the optimization yourself but the point I was trying to make is you don't have to. You can play the gog version perfectly fine as soon as you download it as all that is already done for you. Again, not a steam hater I'm just trying to help people who don't want to do all that extra work but if they want the steam version for whatever reason and don't mind doing all that more power to them.

It's fine if you don't want to do the extra work, but though it wouldn't be too hard to tweak it.

I know, I was just letting people know about it.
Does it do anything else? Like multicore crashes?

I think so, the reviews talk about it so go on the webpage and read those. It doesn't support intel graphics cards but if you have another type installed with it it'll work fine.
I have AMD then so i should be good.
And yeah cause i hate having to limit my Thread count to 2 just to avoid the crashing, that hurts my framerate... :(
