Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition

Failed to initialize renderer
Hi,

This is the error I am getting:

your display does not support the selected resolution. Please select a different resolution in Fallout 3's Launcher under Display Settings.

I have been having problems getting Fallout to stop recognizing my Intel HD 4600 and instead recognize my NVIDIA GTX 965M. I have been unsuccessful in accomplishing this task. After searching around for a while I found a work around on Nexus Mods to get a D3D9 file to get the game to recognize the video card at a GeForce 7900.

When I start the game and go into the options setting, the game does now recognize the video card as something other then the intel card, but when I go to resolution nothing comes up from the drop down list.

I have opened up the prefs.ini in My Games and changed the resolution to 1920x1080, but the game still will not recognize the resolution. I have tried changing from 16x9 to some of the other options listed in the options menu, I htink one might have been 4x3 but still no success.

I would very much like to run a modded version of the game but am unable to with my stupid integrated graphics card.

I do have both the exe and the launcher set to use my Nvidia card in the control panel.

Any thoughts?

did you ever fix this problem?
you dug up a 2017 post to ask a followup? yeowza.

his problem might not be the same as yours; he didn't need to go get some dll off of nexus, he just needed to install old software from the good ol days the game wants; DX12 does it's best to handle the older stuff, but doesn't do a very good job lot of times. Just install a DX9 redistributable to get an actual microsoft one, you probably won't need a hacked one unless you have an intel card or iGPU (which is a separate but similar issue)

if I were you, I'd start with DirectX Legacy support[www.microsoft.com] package (it co-exists with DX12 just fine), and you'll likely need to install a legacy audio codec pack like K-Lite[codecguide.com] to get all the audio formats Fallout 3 uses to work well, too.

there's lots of guides for getting this game to run, though. if you're confused by technical stuff, just follow one of them.

and for the future, please don't rez ancient threads even if you have the exact same hardware; all that usually happens is some poor moderator has to come in and lock it. :-)

happy troubleshooting!
