Black Screen Crash(with sound) possible fix.
So i know alot of ppl have had this happen, your racing/game locks up/black screen/then you can hear the sound still and full control. Have to exit the game lost what you were doing and it sucks. For me i noticed it only ever happened during wet races. So i decided to try something and i removed the weather folder from the game files and suprise suprise, no more crashing/black screen/etc. Granted its not the fix i wanted nor should happen.

But it did work and i can now play the game again and finally continue on my career. Whether or not this will apply to anyone else, i dont know. Hopefully it does help some ppl, although i would not recommend doing this and going online to a wet race as you will be racing dry.

And its possible that wasnt even the problem to begin with and maybe it will crash again totally unrelated to the weather effects. But hey if you have this issue and you have noticed it only happens during full on raining wet races and it fixes it leave a comment, and maybe with enough
support there can be something good in return whether it be from Codemasters or a talented individual to fix the files(if that is in fact the problem)

Edit: In no way am i supporting altering game files in anyway as it is most likely against any sort of Eula, but i paid money for a game i love to play that up until i found this solution for myself, i couldn't. If it is against any EULA i will glady restore the files and fully discourage anyone to try this cuz i dont want anyone getting banned for this, but at the end of the day you cant play a broken game.

I'll try that tonight although mine has this crash regardless of weather.

Are you guys running Nvidia? If so, try exiting Nvidia Geforce Experience, This fixed all the issues with all Codemasters games for me, F1, Dirt3 and Grid2. Which were doing the same issue you have reported, black screen with sound & if you left it long enough the App is already running error.

did that, didnt fix the crashing unfortunately.

When you say exit it, you mean end its task in the task manager?

Well, I went into the task manager and killed "Nvidia Geforce Experience Backend" and "Nvidia Geforce Experience Driver Component" and tried it. Still crashed. thanks anyway

I'm running on an AMD 7950 and I also get the same issue. So I don't think Nvidia Geforce Experience is the sole cause of this crash. But for me, it will crash once but after I open the game again it wont crash again until I either restart my pc, restart steam, or simply close the game normally and open it again.

Getting the black screen with a sunny day replay of a race(Melbourne).

Not a heat problem. My card is running fine.60c.

It's this sorta stuff that deflates you and you think why play again?

I have MSI Afterburner running in the background.

Could that be it?

No way I'm uninstalling it.

Best program ever for controlling my vid card's fans.

It's either F1 gets fixed or it gets the boot up the bum.

Really enjoying F1 2013 which is what is more frustrating.
Best game in the series well without the black screens.

Just noticed my Geforce Expeience software isn't working.

Might uninstall that.

I've now done 2 races without a crash after the latest nvidia drivers. I never got past australia before. So hopefully that fixed it, but we'll see

Here's another potential option for fixing this problem:

My game was always crashing on spain. Get to maybe lap 6 or lap 7 and it would die with the above mentioned issue every time. Tried this GP maybe 20 times and it died consistently.

Then I found on a thread on the Grid 2 forum that could help. Grid 2, also written by Codemasters, likely running the same engine or a slight varient also had people having this exact same problem.

The solution on Grid 2 is to add "-safemode" to the command line parameters for the game. Now when you boot up the same it looks awful. It throws the resolution to lowest and all graphics options to it's lowest. BUT you can then go in to settings and turn all this back on.

First thing I noticed when I did this was that the Rain in Spain was never to be seen again. The rain was gone but since I think the weather in career mode is hard-coded, my race engineer kept telling me about how the rain was about to stop. The rain was actually gone, not just not rendered as everyone went out on options instead of intermediates.

So after adding "-safemode" the game now allowed me to run the full length of the race.

One thing I did notice is that this were getting warmer than normal with this swich on. My MoBo decided it needed to crank all case fans up to 100% which doesn't even happen on skyrim.

Conclusion: Either the rain is what is knackering everyone (people who have this crash when not in the rain please correct me) or safemode switches off some optimizations that are crashing the game that are nothing to do with the graphics options which would make sense since things got quite a bit warmer.

Give this a try and good luck :B1:

Every time I've had it it's been without rain, and there have been other topics on this forum where people have said rain is not the trigger too.

A lot of people seem to think thast rain is the cause, and in some cases there does seem to be a correlation between rain stints and the crash. But I can categoricaly state that rain is not the only cause, if it is a cause at all.

Update: the new Nvidia drivers have done nothing for me in terms of the game crashing during wet racing/qualifiying.
