Editing textures?
Hello everyone,

I've read the 'Visit our new Workshop forum!' post and have copied the links for the vid tutorials etc.

Just like to know before I start getting into these tutorials if there is anyway I can edit the textures of in game items, such as doors, books etc, and then finally incorporate them into the game and eventually upload to the Steam Workshop for you guys.

I ask because that thread makes it seem as though they are tutorials for creating your own maps, and I do not want to create any additional maps, I'd just like to edit the textures in game.

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

I played around with this a little last night. First I found out about a program called texmod and a newer actively developed version of it called umod, but I couldn't get either to work (I think they might be designed for standalone versions of games). Seems like that's the simplest way to go if you have any luck getting them to work.

The next method I found is posted about here: http://www.postalnetwork.org/forums/index.php/topic/605-making-skins/. A lot of people have problems getting the dds plugin to work these days (I can't remember if I read that it was something to do with windows 7 or newer versions of photoshop) but the advice is to install both 32 and 64 bit versions - I did this and it worked for me (win 7 64 bit, PS CC). I only got as far as opening the skins in photoshop but haven't tried doing anything with them yet. Sounds like it should work though.

Good luck ;)

Hey Craig,

Thanks for your reply. I'll give that a go and see where I get.

Would you be able to post back here if you manage to get your edited skins into the game?

There is a group of people out there in the 'Concept' area of Greenlight who are making a HD Postal 2 texture pack for the whole game. Users name is Mazzir and the pack they are creating is called Postal 2: UDK.

No worries and thanks for the link :) I'll go have a crack and something simple like changing a colour or something in a little bit and let you know how I get on. I was just playing around with it out of curiousity really, I've never done any modding or skinning before so don't expect anything with my name on it to appear in the workshop :P

I'm afraid I'm stumped :/ I followed the instructions from the link I sent and although the changes show up in the editor (providing you save the files as TGA and not BMP), I can't get them to show up in game. I'll have another crack at some point though. Let me know if you fair any better ;)

Cheers for your reply Craig. I'm going to give this a try a little later as well, will message back here if I manage to get it to work.

There is also the Postal 2 editor in the Tools section of your Steam library. Not sure if that allows you to edit in-game items, but will try that later as well.

Yeah that's what I'm using :) Anyway, disregard my last reply as I was being an eejit (in my defence I've got a bad cold so my brain isn't functioning at full capacity right now) :P So yeah, clever me was the saving the files back into the 'POSTAL2Editor' folder instead of the actual game folder - 'POSTAL2Complete'. Do that and you're cooking with gas ;) Have fun! :D

Ps the link only mentions the ChameleonSkins and ChameleonHeadSkins utx's, but there's a ton of others you can open the editor. Hopefully we can edit them too ;)

Haha, no worries buddy! I know how you feel, have just recovered from a bad cold myself.

I've edited the baton stick, just painted it red to rest, and saved the .dds file in to the Postal 2 Complete/ Textures area (overwriting when asked), but when in game, the stick still shows up black instead of red.

What exactly was the process you went through, and did you have to download nVidia's DDS viewer for PS?

Sorry mate, just noticed your reply. I just followed these instructions like gospel: http://www.postalnetwork.org/forums/index.php/topic/605-making-skins/. I had to download the dds viewer to edit the extracted textures in photoshop, which I save as TGA not BMP. The guy who wrote the instructions in the link explains it better than I'll be able to today lol :S
