SPOILERS!!!!:
Edit: Does this keep happening with the absolutely impossible time-limits and scripted speedboats?
I'm on the canon delivery mission, (Caribbean in a Nutshell) and it seems I have to sail there in direct sail mode, if I want to make it in time, as I'm being double punished by using the map. Time moves too quick there, and the speedboats will always catch up on me. So much for having a small fast ship. This game design is beyond me, and I'm getting pretty annoyed that I'll have to spend a day sailing there... :(
If I use the forts to kill the speedboats, I don't have time to make it to my goal...
Edit 2:
I feel like I should add that I don't mind the game being hard, but at the same time, I want it to be fair and obey the same "laws" it gives me. If I could go super sonic on the world map, I probably would..
It’s difficult to explain in words how to do this, but I’ll try.
As soon as you notice that you are being pursued on the global map, you need to immediately switch to combat mode. You swim in the desired direction until you have the opportunity to use the “swim to” function to the desired bay or cape. If you need to make sure that you are moving in the right direction, you should periodically go to the global map for a couple of seconds. After making sure that the direction is correct, quickly return to combat swimming mode.
If you have little experience in escaping pursuit, it is better for you to save the game before each exit to the global map, where you will be pursued by the enemy again. After a couple of such quick displacement through the “swim to” function, the enemy begins to lag significantly behind you and stops pursuing you.
Good luck
P.S.
You can finally say that you have perfectly mastered this mechanics of moving around the Caribbean Sea only after you win the “Sailing Regatta” quest.
Over time, you will also understand why the developers made sailing on the global map so dangerous at the beginning of the game.
For deep and atmospheric movement in the Caribbean Sea, while your fleet and experience are not yet strong enough.
Therefore, with special additional quests, they make you think that you are still a “very small fish” and you still need to come up with something tactically in order to survive and grow to such a size when no one wants to fight with you, knowing about the consequences of the attack
And when you or your navigator officer take the “Experienced Sailor” perk, you will be able to evade enemies in the global map mode in 75% (no perk only in 25%) of cases, with the exception of quests. Well, when you take the “Thunder of the Seas” perk in 100% of cases (I never take this perk, it’s very difficult to engage in piracy, immediately there are fewer ships for this, and everyone starts to give up).
The conclusion is the following: it’s not the game and the swimming modes that are made poorly, it’s just that you don’t yet have enough experience and knowledge of why it was done this way and not otherwise.
Another couple things... 3. You can go a long way with the "sail to" menu. If you are getting anywhere near a friendly island, you can teleport to it or to the opposite side.
4. In real life, if I have a map of the Caribbean, I can look at it in real time, without going into fast-forward mode, and I can see the whole thing. In the video game, as soon as you open the map, you can just see the nearest 1 or two islands, and time begins passing an hour per second. Therfore I save before opening the map, figure out what direction I need to go, and re-load if anything goes wrong. Some might call this save scumming.
That all being said, I'm still new to the game so I'm probably saying things you already know.
