You might get the quest by just talking to people on the street.
Hook
In the same game I also found a soldier in the tavern crying how he has to go to the duel and doesn't want to.
LHookins is right. Your oponenents are very strong. I had rapier and the enemy officer would kill me with on strike. He would strike through the block and take away all my health with one strike. I wouldn't even attemp this without a gun, lots of ammunition and lots of potions for health.
The opponent officer comes to the duel with 2 friends who are not as strong but will also chace and attack you and give you very hard time.
Matter of honor quest may only be taken in towns that has lighthouse near (except Port-Royal).
I had two variations. The officer in the tavern, and the man approaching me on the street, and I had that one twice.
The duels have always been fought at a lighthouse, and the bad guy's two companions sometimes attacked, sometimes didn't, probably always the same in any given quest.
Until I learned to use a gun in the fight (how unsporting for a duel!) he was killing me about 10 times for each time I killed him. You will learn to dodge, and to recognize when a heavy attack is coming. He can kill you in one hit, even if you've spammed health potions. He has his own health potions as well.
Unfortunately, unlike some *other* games in the series <cough cough> your opponent does not drop whatever excellent weapon he's using. Once I got a flintstone, probably worth the least of anything in the game. I think they were mocking me.
This is actually a worthwhile quest, just for the fencing practice against a very powerful opponent.
If you have to fight the two companions, it's useful to go behind the rocks on the edge of the cliff so that only one can attack you at a time.
Hook
It’s better not to search the corpses in the battle at the lighthouse if you expect the plot to continue, especially since they usually have nothing valuable!
