No you can not craft the wood chest, they are purchaced from the Bankers.
You loose doubloons as well. It takes more doubloons than 100 and you only get 100, 000 pesos for the chest. Least I think

Hmm I dont see any options to exchange my dubloons for chests, and I dont see them in his inventory either
K menu 150 doubloons + 1 empty chest then take it to the banker and arround town to see what you get. I remember I lost cash doing it so I haven't made them since. not sure what price, or maybe my Accountant skill level had something to do with it.

what do you mean david? I craft full chests of doubloons, it takes 150 of them to fill a chest. If you sell the chest you get 15000 pesos, 100 per doubloon. Also you can just take them back out of the chest if you like, though you don't get an empty chest back.

My problem is I don't have empty chests. I need to give someone 10 chests of dubloons, I have 1500 dubloons ready to put in, but in my craft menu is says required component: empty chest.
Which I can't craft or find.
Hmmm I was sure it cost money you didn't get back. Covers face, looks down, ohoh its a plank with water under it.

you lose the money on the empty chest =P, they are cheap though.

I will give you this though... I am not certain if there is a reason to put them into chests. They weigh more (the weight of the chest itself), and you cannot spend them until you take them out of the chest. I put them into chests simply because... um... I dunno I guess just for the fun of having "chests full of gold". It might be that they are somehow safer in the chests somehow, like if you get robbed in the jungle and actually give the people your money instead of just killing them. Maybe they can't take gold if its in the chests.

Not sure.... again I'm just back to "I'm a pirate. I keep my gold in chests. Its what we do."

It's part of the payment in this case, he only wants chests.
hahaha :)
You can also get the chests from treasure maps and the one Damsel in the jungle that you take to recover her deceased fathers fortune.

well there you go, I guess some payments require chests of gold instead of just gold. Good to know. Wish there were other reasons to do it =P. Maybe I could bury a chest of gold then make like 20 treasure maps and sell them to a bunch of poor saps for 20 doubloons each.

Look for treasures. I got about of 7 doubloon chests from the "Damsel in the jungle" quest as the part of treasure
