Hook's Mod
Does anyone know where to download it/how to install it for the Steam version? Or really, any mod that makes it so that crew is visible on the deck of your ship in 1st Person?

Are you using the tehomod that I included with Hookmod or a different version?

You were using the mod before so you shouldn't have any problems. There is no executable code in my mod, only the script files, and the only executable that should give an error like that is the d3d8.dll module from tehomod.

You are probably trying to use an unstable version of tehomod which requires C++ redist dll . Use either stable 1.0 or 1.3BETA2

Thanks, kb31. My version still ships with tehomod 1.0

IMPORTANT: If you have an older version of Hookmod installed, you MUST delete the PROGRAM folder before installing a new version. If you do not do this there will be older versions of some files still there that will cause problems.

This mode looks really nice. Can't wait to try it out this evening. One question. I read something about smoke testing. As I couldn't find what it is in the readme (may be I overlooked it), what changes did you do to smoke (I guess cannon smoke?).

Heh! Sorry about that. The "smoke test" is when you first turn it on and check to make sure smoke isn't coming out. If it passed the smoke test, that means it didn't blow up the first time I ran it.

Matt's run time error above: his install didn't pass the smoke test.

Once upon a time with Pirates of the Caribbean I tried to get cannon smoke to drift with the wind instead of staying where you fired the cannons but was unsuccessful.

Ah OK, lol, thanks for clarification.

Anyway is there a possibility (mod) that can increase the amount of smoke during cannon fire. At least for me there isn't enough smoke in the air during a heavy combat.

Christoph: I haven't looked at that part of the code. Eventually I'll be doing some work on ship combat similar to how Pirates of the Caribbean was rewritten for that mod, and when I do I'll look at the smoke.

I may not publish any cannon changes in any case. Any change I make will probably make ship combat more difficult, but a bit more realistic. Remember, anything that makes gunnery easier for you also makes it easier for your enemies.

so is this mod stable and easy to install? I am fatigued by tweaking games and installs at this stage...

Extracted from the readme file:

Note that the mod is made so that you can install or remove it without affecting saved games.

Unzip the file. Copy the files from the unzipped folder to your SD:TEHO folder. When you are done you should have a PROGRAM folder in the same folder as engine.exe. Some files from the mod will replace files in the RESOURCE folder, allow them to overwrite.

To uninstall the mod, delete the program folder, this README file, the tehomod_hookmod.ini file, and delete the d3d8.dll file and tehomod.ini file if you do not use activemap or another mod requiring them.

There is a configuration file with some default settings. There is also a version of the configuration file with the settings I use in my game. The defaults should be fine for most people, but are there to allow you to tailor the settings as you wish.

I've been using the oldest parts of this mod for over 900 hours. No one has reported serious problems and many people are using the mod. While the version is currently 0.1 BETA it's about to go live with version 1.0 with no changes.

Note: The 1-12-17 patch does not conflict with Hookmod so it still works and is safe to use, at least for now. While Hookmod checks the version number, it does not check the date (one patch did not change the date anyway), but a later version of the mod will. I will keep checking any time there is a new update to make sure there are no conflicts.

The Regatta is still broken at Barbados. <sigh>
