Fast sailing trick?
I keep reading about how you can sail across the map in half the time it takes on the open seas by going into battle map ( where you can go 1st or 3rd person). However whenever i have done it and gone back to the world map my boat ends up inside islands.

Can someone please explain how to do this so i can do the Caribbean in a Nutshell quest / Marathons. I have the game on steam plus all the expansions, just can't figure this out.

Thanks in advance.

There is no way to "sail faster". You can however make time go faster! Hit the ' + ' to speed up time, if you want to slow time then press ' - '. This also works on the map.

If that's not what you're looking for, I'm sorry but I've no idea what you mean.

You can get to a destination in less game time by sailing on the map and avoiding the world map except to cross an island region boundary. It takes more real time though. There should be descriptions on how it works in the forum if you want to search.

Thanks Hook, that is what i was wondering. I just cant seem to figure out how to accomplish this because when i do return to the world map to update i end up inside islands. I will try to find these descriptions. if you have the link i'd appreciate the help to them.

The only time you should end up "inside and island" is near the mainland. Describe the problem more completely including steps on how to reproduce it and I'll try to figure it out.

It's essential to have a world map background with the island regions marked, and a copy of the world map you can refer to with the same region markings. Both of these can be found online. Look in the guides section. Then you need to know where you are in relation to the boundaries.

I used to measure the distance to the region boundary, then record my sailing time and speed to determine when I was nearing a boundary. I'd go to the world map when I figured I was close. If I wasn't close enough, I'd reload from a game I saved just before going to the world map and sail some more. Eventually I'd cross the boundary and could continue sailing.

You find out what island region you're in by initiating a save and finding out what the name of the save file is, then aborting the save.

The mod I'm working on has both the worldmap background and a map with the regions marked. It will be available for public release shortly, as soon as the beta testers have decided the 1.5.1 version doesn't introduce any errors that weren't in the 1.4.1 version, which was tested extensively. I no longer have to measure distances and record how far I've traveled. :)

I was just using the battle sailing from Port-au-Prince down, till i got close to the bottom of the map near Cape Santa Maria, then id use the world map to update this, that when i would end up inside the island connected to Cartagena. I shall try this save trick

Yeah there's a problem with the mainland. The map scale is different all around the mainland and at Cuba, and the 3D world doesn't match the world map. You'll find yourself someplace you didn't expect when sailing near the mainland occasionally. Eventually you'll figure out how the area works and won't have many problems any more.
