Hook
It's essential to have a world map background with the island regions marked, and a copy of the world map you can refer to with the same region markings. Both of these can be found online. Look in the guides section. Then you need to know where you are in relation to the boundaries.
I used to measure the distance to the region boundary, then record my sailing time and speed to determine when I was nearing a boundary. I'd go to the world map when I figured I was close. If I wasn't close enough, I'd reload from a game I saved just before going to the world map and sail some more. Eventually I'd cross the boundary and could continue sailing.
You find out what island region you're in by initiating a save and finding out what the name of the save file is, then aborting the save.
The mod I'm working on has both the worldmap background and a map with the regions marked. It will be available for public release shortly, as soon as the beta testers have decided the 1.5.1 version doesn't introduce any errors that weren't in the 1.4.1 version, which was tested extensively. I no longer have to measure distances and record how far I've traveled. :)
