Bounty everytime I murder!?
I'm really frustrated about this. I'm trying to stealthily kill an NPC just outside of Skingrad, and there are no other people or guards anywhere near, and I kill them with one shot from my bow and arrow. Yet I still get a 1000-septim bounty even though there is no way anyone could have seen or heard said action. This makes it really hard to play a stealthy assassin type character.

I can understand that this is annoying but if you're a bit of a hoarder / explorer then it should be easy to make 1000 septims. Go out, explorer, kill bandits and take all their items and armor with you, then sell it :)

What's the sneaking icon (the outline of an eye that outlines your crosshair when you crouch) show? Is it lit up and opaque, or transparent and somewhat faded? The first situation means that you're detected and people know you're there, while situation #2 means that nobody knows you're around. You need to be in situation #2 in order to not get a bounty.

Trust me, no one saw me. It was definitely situation #2.

It's not just sight that factors into this; creatures and NPC's can hear you, too. How much noise were you making? What's your Sneak skill at?

Yeah, Oblivion guards are notoriously psychic and unrelenting. They will follow you into the deepest depths of Cyrodiil for that stolen sweetroll you accidentally grabbed with "Z"

You should level your sneak. Once it gets high enough, you can literally crouch infront of a guard and get steal and they won't notice.

100% chameleon and you can slap guards with a dagger across their face and they won't see you xd

Yeah I actually tried to assassinate said NPC while I had 100% chameleon and i still got the bounty. Well, guess the system's just flawed. Nothing a few console commands can fix ;) But still, Oblivion is a great game and among my absolute favourites.

Not just Oblivion guards, I had a guard from Solitude follow me all the way to Riften one day...
