Addendum: Despite setting Morph (?) to one of the trigger buttons, it only responds (sometimes) to the right stick being wiggled?? not pressed, but wiggled. So for some reason it's binding by its own self the morph command to the camera control stick and seemingly random directions, resulting in it sometimes rapid fire switching. It's also impossible to play properly with a DS4 controller for this reason as the control scheme, no matter what, is ridiculous and unintuitive, resulting in an unfairly increased difficulty because you can't make quick decisive reactions to in game situations any more. :(
This is made worse because even if I turn off the gamepad in the game's setup, and try and use keyboard controls only, NOTHING responds now once I actually get into game. In the menus, it's all fine. Everything works properly, but the moment the game starts and I'm in a level, nothing on the keyboard responds at all, requiring me to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to even get OUT of the game. Once I've unplugged the controller and started the game up that way, THEN it works... sort of.
Though I'm told I can switch form mid twirl and given some puzzles it looks like I should be able to shift from one form to the next then use their special ability (world 1-2 is indicative of this with one of the first puzzles where you can only get gems for most of it as the blonde sister, then the last set of gems in that line are only accessable by the red haired sister), I cannot. In no fashion does it work properly, requiring me to either miss some gems, or have to go about it in a very strange way, such as reaching past the gems, then switching, then trying to jump back off and collect them then dash back again midair.
Something is very fundamentally broken with this game's controls it seems resulting in a very unpleasant experience whilst trying to play it. This is compounded by the fact that the only way to set up any controls is upon first launching the game, and at no point does the game have any quick or simple way to quit if there are issues, resulting in a very long and arduous start-test-close-adjust-restart sequence that only adds to the frustration.
The game still controls a little wonky (using the triggers for world twisting means you can sometimes press just a LITTLE too hard on the trigger and it switches rapidly back immediately after switching, leading to some VERY cheap deaths :/
The only workaround that I found till now is to completely disable gamepad in the settings, and then use Xpadder to manually map the gamepad inputs to keyboard inputs.
The following worked for me:
Steam -> Settings
Select Controller -> "General Controller Settings" -> Enable "PlayStation Configuration Support"
Close the Controller Settings and start your game.
The game's configuration tool should now say "A controller compatible with Microsoft Xbox 360 game controller was detected".
Now uses "R2" as the world-switch button, instead of the right analog stick.
Every Playstation game fails when it comes to Steams PS4 controller mapping.
Remapping the PS4 controller buttons also fails on Steam.
If you are on Windows get a XBox Controller.
If you are on Linux get a XInput Controller.
.. oh wait Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams is still not available for Linux.
This issue can be caused by a bad calibration of the right analog stick. When plugging in a gamepad, or after a reboot, it's a good idea to rotate the analog sticks a few times, and press the analog triggers to their limits, to have the system detect properly the ranges of the axes. Otherwise, the axes are detected partially. So before playing, it's good to do that.
Also, if your gamepad, or similar accessory, is not fully supported by the operating system - like analog triggers being treated as digital buttons - install Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable. (Unplug the peripheral and connect again.)
