I do agree that no one should do a totally vanilla play-through but I think you're exaggerating about the amount of mods that don't work with openmw or absolutely require mwse.
I saw a decent amount of comments asking for openMW support when I was looking for mods the other day. Regardless it doesn't work with MGE XE which is a must have mod for myself or Kezyma's Voices of Vvardenfell which I just found very recently and currently having a blast with.

What do you pay for Nexus?
No, if you're paying for mods or nexus itself you're getting scammed unless you're paying the premium for no ads and faster downloads butt otherwise nexus is 100% free to use and download mods.

That's fine if you're missing as a hobby then yes use mwse but op is looking for first time play through and I'd suggest openmw with texture mods and ground coverings (grass) of pc can handle it. I was in the same boat and wanted to play actual morrowind and settled with openmw, textures, and tameriel rebuilt for a mostly vanilla trip with remastered visuals at 4k 60 fps.

OpenME does what Mge xe does but it's a very simple installation, install morrowind and then unzip and run openmw and it'll probably find the files and set it up and then you can select all the enhancements and fixes from the launcher.

I did not Start with Nexus. Good if you do not have to pay.
Maybe I will start with some Vampire Playing.
But you seem to need a lot of Time with all these Mods.

If you really want a Skyrim like experience and have a lot of patience then wait until Skywind comes out at some point (probably still going to take years) is a fan based conversion mod that creates Morrowind inside Skyrim's engine.

I don't know where you're looking but you should not be paying for mods unless you want to personally support someone through a donation.

I did not start with later Games.
I like Morrowind and its Gameplay and thought I could get more out of it.
20 Years of Modding and good Players and Fans
I thought there could be more than Makeup and Waiting.

Nothing, anyone can access Nexus or Moddb or.... for free. Truth

One time I paid for a month of faster access only because I knew my son and I were going to do a deep STEP mod installs for skyrim and FO4, but fast D/L access is really not required.
