The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

simplist/best graphics overhaul?
windows 7, tried twice to install mgso3+patch and mge xe and couldn't get the game to run. at first it would all just be black but then we figured out we had to run it in windowed mode for some reason, then couldn't get past the intro video due to some weather script error it wouldn't let me click through.
this is a recurring theme with morrowind for me, from back when it first came out, where there are heaps of script errors and crashes whenever i try to mod it. is there any simpler overhaul that actually works?

Do not use MGSO. Yes its quick to overhaul the game, but as you can see, it is not stable whatsoever. A stable game requires a bit more patience but it is definitely worth it.

What you want to do first is download Patch for Purists-
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45096

Morrowind Code Patch-
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/19510

These two mods will fix many of the errors you run across. They don't touch graphics but this is the first step to getting a stable game.

The next mod you will want that adds the ability to enhance the graphics is MGE XE-
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/41102

MGE XE will allow custom resolutions, anti aliasing, new shaders like depth of field, sun shafts, new water particles, and it increases render distance ten fold. These 3 mods are the essential to modding Morrowind from the start. What I suggest doing is downloading small graphical mods one by one, it takes time but it makes something great. The fast way will cause errors.

One last word of advice, install all of the mods you download manually. Morrowind is an old game so it isn't very fond of mod managers, most of the time the mods will not work correctly and cause errors.

Best of luck.

Thank you FUJIIDEW, tonight I've decided to play Morrowind again after several years and had the same question as the thread starter.
Damn, Morrowind is the best Elder Scrolls game so far, so many fantastic moments in the game! I wish there would be a remake with bugfixes and adaption to actual hardware...

You can disable Distant Land (MGE XE) or change it settings to lower value.
For example, in game menu set Draw Distance to 50-70% and to 2 cells in MGE XE, then disable Dynamic shadows and shaders (like depth of field, Bloom). Etc, etc.. until you get a comfy fps.

You download it during step 5:
5. Download MGE XE https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/41102 and extract it to \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Morrowind.
It comes with MGE-XE. If it's not there then you missed this step/extracted MGE-XE in wrong location or downloaded the installer instead of an archive[www.nexusmods.com].

P.S. Btw, I wrote these steps in an order that implies that every time mod files conflict with each other you should overwrite conflicting files on each step. If you do something wrong, then I am afraid you have to start over.

Well, it should. Other than stutters on cell switches and very rare occasional crashes (which by the way may not happen to you if you are not going to use marksman weapons) the game should be very stable.

Just one question.

29. Tick all .esm and .esp files in the Mods tab.

In this step there were ESP files as well. I left them unticked. Only ticked the lowercase files.
Was this correct or did i need to tick the uppercase ones as well?

Cheers
