"Unable to detect Uplay installation"

So pay for the deluxe edition of the game, spend hours downloading it, free up my evening to play the game and boom, "Unable to detect Uplay installation. Please make sure Uplay is installed."
What is "Uplay" ? Why doesn't the game install everything it needs before allowing me to run it? A quick search shows nothing useful about this here but elsewhere seems to be a huge pain in the a-hole to troubleshoot this isse.
Should I just refund the game and forget it? Or can someone point me to an easy / simple solution?

D/l and install have the stupid thing running in background when you start the game. Without the Ubisoft connect running in background the game gives you the error you got. Just click on icon on desktop after install.

In order to play our games, you need to have a Ubisoft Connect Launcher installed on your PC, even if the game was purchased through Steam.

Uplay has been replaced by Ubisoft Connect Launcher and can be downloaded here Click here[ubi.li]

MackDaddyVic - So just to confirm, you've installed our Launcher and still getting an error message when launching the game? Did you create a Ubisoft account and link it with Steam?

i think UB should just come with installing the game from steam tbh, so you dont have to go and install it from their website
