There's fun to be had, but in this case, I recommend giving Ghost Recon: Wildlands a try first, as it seems to marry new modern formula and the tone much more familiar to the classic GR. These two games are IMO the closest in the series. If you'll like Wildlands then perhaps give Breakpoint a try, however I suggest doing some research on YouTube first.
If you're an OG Ghost Recon fan I also suggest checking out ARMA 3 and Ground Branch.
Skip this and just get Wildlands if you're looking for a more recent Ghost Recon game to play. This one will just disappoint you.
For what it is this game is an incredibly arcady and generic open world game, closer to a game like far cry 3-6 than ghost recon.
If you liked the original ghost recon i recommend the expansions if you haven't tried them (desert storm and island thunder), also the classic rainbow six games most importantly rainbow six 3, but you probably know those.
There's also a lesser known game called "sum of all fears", which is basically ghost recon 1 but it plays as CIA operators and mostly revolves around CQC, i never played it because it's banned in most places but if you can get your hands on it it might scratch your itch.
The only recent game like GR i can think of is Ground Branch; which is developed by some of the devs from the original ghost recon/rainbow six and a BIG recommend from me.
It's still EA but it's the closest experience to those classics imo.
Ready or Not is a great game too, but it's more like the modern day SWAT 4 (spiritual successor) so i'm not sure if you'd like that.
MTX ain't needed and you can farm most stuff in-game if you're desperate.
Has a bit more depth in it's mechanics too and it's on steam, i recommend it if you haven't played it because it still holds up today.
Hidden & Dangerous 2 was my childhood game and probably one of the best WW2 tactical shooters I ever played. Still holds up well today imo.
That and Operation Flashpoint (now ArmA: Cold War Assault) were my introductions to realistic shooters/milsims.
Can defo recommend them to anyone who liked the original Ghost Recon 1.
Even when playing it as an adult i somehow felt the nostalgia, you instantly feel how it is one of the games from the golden age of tactical gaming, it's amazing.
