FPS Drop Fix + Menu/Cutscene FPS Drop Fix + Steam DX11 Fix....
Due to the conflicting information out there, addressing the random Vulkan API fps drops, and many other fps issues, the Steam version of GRB requires a special code to force the game to launch in DX11. Putting -DX11 in the launch option will not work, and putting -force -dx11, will not work as well. Renaming the GRB_Vulkan.exe to GRB.exe will not work too. A lot of "fixes" I've read out there don't work on Steam.

DX11 fixed all of my fps issues in GRB. It's not your gpu drivers, it's not your rig, it's the game using Vulkan API which is causing unstable performance. Vulkan API was thrown on top of the game during March of 2020, which does nothing to truly enhance the game at all. The only thing it will enhance is massive fps drops lol.

That being said, you're missing out on NOTHING switching to DX11. The game plays the same, looks the same, with stable fps through out. I experienced no stuttering, or degrade in performance at all switching to DX11.

The Steam version, you may find within the game folder, two applications that have GRB.exe and GRB_Vulkan.exe, both launch the game in Vulkan, no matter what you do. So, if you want to fix the fps issues, you have to launch the game in DX11 doing this....

*** Open steam, library, right click GRB, click properties, select launch options, and copy and past this code...

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ghost Recon Breakpoint\GRB.exe" %command%

^ VERY IMPORTANT, see where it said "C" you may need to change that to whatever drive you installed the game in. You see where it said "Program Files (x86)" you may need to change that as well, depending on where you installed the game. Overall, the location code I posted above should be changed to where ever the GRB.exe is located on your system. Hopefully that makes sense. If you do it right, the game will start with the option to launch in DX11 or Vulkan, select DX11.

Enjoy!

Specs tested on....

- AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor, 3493 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 32 Logical Processor(s)
- 3070 RTX - 8GB, 5120 x 1440p res. Very high/ Ultra settings.
- 16 GB ram.
- Windows 10

Thanks for this guide, i hope more people can realize the poor implementation of Vulkan is one of the main cause of issues with the game.
And the fact that it will just launch GRB_vulkan.exe most of the time anyway regardless of launch options.

The method of deleting GRB_vulkan.exe, copying GRB.exe, and then renaming the copy GRB_vulkan.exe worked for me at least (then it will be DX11 no matter what it chooses to launch with), but this method is better if you don't want to mess around with that.

No problem, also forgot to mention...

when using DX11, you can control + alt + delete, and locate "GRB.exe," if you see it then it's using DX11. If you see "GRB_Vulkan," then you did something wrong.

After you apply the above fix, you can create a short cut for the application, you won't see the option for DX11 or Vulkan I believe, the game will just automatically start in DX11. If you go into Steam, click on GRB, then click the play button icon, it will always give you the option for Vulkan and DX11, before the game starts.

Hope that helps. It took be freakin hours to figure this all out lol. The game plays like a dream, much more stable and faster fps than Wildlands.

Hiya with regard to stuttering and wobbly FPS ,this worked for me . Put graphics to High and take off Vertical Sync .

I tried every possible graphical setting while using Vulkan, unless the resolution is extremely low, trigger warning, 1920 x 1080p, then it will play stable. However, I think it just delays the inevitable. I find Vulkan API extremely unstable for this game.

I play on 5120 x 1440p, so far zero problems on DX11. Crazy smooth frames. Might want to try DX11 anyways, just to see if you can crank up the settings even further with better frames, as an experiment ;-)

On vulcan, game stutters like hell, but on DX11 game is smooth as butter, except from time to time when I turn the camera, the fps drops below 40 or 30. I dont know why this is happening and don't know any solution to this.

Absolutely smoother experience but for me it gives everything a grey wash and from what I've read there is no solution
Unfortunately for me, Vulkan gives me objectively a better experience performance-wise

But the trade-off is that the game crashes to desktop in mere seconds upon launching. Its a coin-toss as to whether GRB_Vulkan crashes, or runs perfectly smooth for hours.

I still can't identify what causes the crash and what prevents it from happening.

Thanks. This advice saved my day. i7-9700, 2080 Super, 4k and had awful performance after about 5-10 mins of play. I can play with everything on max now.

Now that we discovered how to solve the fps issue by switching to dx11...
how the hell do we get Vulkan working without the random 6fps drops? Haha! I'm all ears....
