Weapons and equipment

Where do you buy personal weapons or equipment? After the jail took my stuff I managed to find a pistol, but I've been to a bunch of islands and no merchant anywhere sells a cutlass or rapier I can use at all.

After you get arrested in the tutorial and the governor takes your weapon, you can go back to him and he gives you a replacement weapon. Otherwise there's street vendors in towns and one of them will sometimes sell melee weapons or pistols but always has ammo for sale.

Ah, didn't know that about the governor. I've been to all the street vendors on several islands and they all have the same small assortment of crap for sale, nobody's had weapons yet haha

You'd think they'd have some vendor that sells them regularly

But there is, a street vendor selling weapons.
In the starting town, during the prologue, he's between the brothel & and the tavern, on the side of the latter.
All towns use to have one and I highly doubt that changed, they always have the appearance of a pirate and are sitting behind/beside a retail stand.

Yeah all he's ever sold so far is ammo, but doesn't have any melee weapons

I am also having a hard time finding weapon and armor vendors on the street, and though I am playing Sandbox mode, I can safely say that it is definitely not all towns that have one. IIRC I had to go as far as San Juan from Cuba to get a harpoon, and that was all that was being sold. Getting weapons and armor on my playthrough right now is a massive pain, and since I am forced in to a nation alignment on my playthrough, I can only go to certain towns to even check.

Really would like some advice on this myself, only time I've been able to get a weapon beyond that was doing the governor quests for hunting down a gang leader in the jungles, since that leader seemingly always has a weapon on his body.

Also totally separate issue, I boarded a ship and spawned with ZERO crew to help. :( Died and the autosave softlocked me into the boarding

are u doing charles?? i remember doing the tutorial and what i did before seeing the gov., was to go to the grotto and stored my weapons and meds there, then after arrest went back and got em. saves time on trying to rebuy everything else.

I think it's random, the problem is time doesn't advance in the tutorial so there's no chance of resetting once you click on him

If you can on the deck you can run up stairs and try to create a chokepoint where they only come at you so many at a time. I've had to do that before.

Traders in Towns got em. Not the Trader for Goods, but those little market stalls all around town.

Is it randomly generated? I've been playing over 8hrs and have not seen one gun in stalls or on enemies.

Armour vendors are the biggest source, RNG based but the chance increases as your character level rises.

Other than that; Treasures(-Maps), random loot from ship cabins or even some specific unique quests reward.

you don't need to go that far you can store all your gear in the house in the middle of the prison and the order before seeing the governor
