About Helen and Mary. (spoiler alert)

I have a small question, Can you choose to either pick Helen or Mary at the end of the Pirate Saga quest after doing the things necessary to romance them both like in To Each His Own or do I have to decide which sequence of events should I do to romance one of them from the start? also I heard Helen has some extra content, Do I need the Black Mark DLC for that or is it added in the base game?

You can pick Mary as long as you reject Helen at the end, though you have to do a lot to romance Helen and it's very easy to mess up.

In order to romance Mary all one has to do is to love her and not to cheat on her. And save her life like a gallant hero. You get a lovey dovey kickass vanguard who will NOT let Charless get cold at night. Plus you won't look like a gold digger and Jessica will bless this relationship:)

In order to romance Helen one needs to ♥♥♥♥ up to her like a natural simp, as doing any less than perfectly reading her mind and fulfilling her every wish immediately ends the relationship. And even a successful relationship is borderline sexless as Helen will blueball Charles quite often. :P

Actually Helen will often approach me when I enter a port on the dock and demand intercourse. We then go to the tavern and do so and after we both get a skill increase.

Mary at least accepts Charles as he is. And does not give up on Charles just because we did not call her X or did not do Y.

And Charles can feel attractive and desirable when around Mary.

With Helen he can always wonder if he is losing his mojo or whether she is not cheating on him with someone else wherever her head hurts again. :P

The story is written for Charles to favour Mary over Helen.

However, we are discussing about both girls on their own regardless of the story.

There are positives and negatives to each girl.

Mary accepts Charles for who he is simply because she needs a shoulder to lean on, especially after her former boyfriend Alan Milrow was killed by Chad(not) Capper. She is clingy and sometimes gets annoying when she keeps asking for ♥♥♥, and you won't have the option to refuse in the beginning (not sure if it's related to Leadership score or ♥♥♥ quota, or both). However she can fight but... that's not so important in the current state of the game where you can choose 3 out of: Tichingitu, Folke, Claude, Tommy, Helen/Mary, Hercule/Longway. If you went for Knippel then 5 in total. That's still a lot to choose from.

Helen is independent in nature and loves the feeling of freedom. The reason she trusts the prophecy is because she is superstitious, just like sailors of that period. After seeing that the prophecy was fulfilled, she realised that Charles is her one.
Returning the items to Gladys is just the right thing to do, not to make Helen like you. I would return the items in real-life if I was ever placed in that situation.
She can start off with 90 nav which is pretty huge for a person like me who always plays on the highest difficulty, and she also fights well with light weapons (just watch her spam fast attacks). On top of that, getting a full ship upgrade for max 5000 doubloons without providing any strategic materials is a great plus for any captain looking to upgrade his unique ship, especially after the Saga where you earn so many doubloons.

At the end of the day, everyone has their own opinions. I would pick Mary for story, and Helen for more comfort in my playthroughs.

I was more successful with Helen than with Mary , because I was able to command a class 1 ship pretty early.

The devs are working on the personal quest for Mary, which is supposed to be comparable in size to Longway's quest, and it will be released as a part of a DLC with 1.5 patch. So, that should answer your question.

I want to upvote the previous comment. Helen is a b***h, while Merry truly loves you with all her heart and is honestly a better and kinder person who really cares for you.

Helen feels like only simulates emotions, but is in fact as cold hearted as a true pirate royalty can be. Besides it honestly feels good to flip her the middle finger at the end. I was sick and tired with her bad attitude, trying to do everything perfect just so I can get a single kiss once in a while. My Charles ain't a simp.

I say screw her and her island. I have 20m+ pesos invested in the "stock market", so why do i need a backwater island in the middle of nowhere anyway? My personal island is better located and it produces ironwood, so in your face.

Given how she expects Charles to act altruistic to earn her love it seems to me that he adventure with piracy was meant to be rather short.

Once she gets her inheritance I see no reason why she cannot just become a rich businesswomen and leave piracy behind.

Mary was written long time ago and it shows. She's basically how teenage boys would imagine "nympho" wich has nothing to do with actual condition. She has no personality outside "wanna bang?" and is very poorly written, like some fanfic. Helen on the other hand, is not appealing to me. Don't really like her romantically, would prefer her to be a companion, but if you reject her, she dissapears. So, out of the two, I chose Mary hoping that some proper writer will take care of her dialogues and add some content. And enough with this "always ♥♥♥♥♥ male fantasy trope". Please.
