For Helen, it's a two-way thing. You give and take.
All you have to do is fulfill the prophecy (which is free btw) and be nice during her quest. You don't need a perfect score to unlock her best side. Helen also knows something called boundaries. She doesn't go too far in terms of having sex and provides you with far better rewards than Mary now.
For Mary, she gets so annoying whenever she asks for sex in a tavern. Her fighting skills don't mean much because the player can fight on his own anyway, all he needs are meatshields.
Also not to mention we are suffering from an oversupply of semi-immortal fighting officers, which makes Mary less appealing.
But Charles got such a high libido that he even seduced married women. :P
Helen: My head hurts today. Another time ok?
Mary: We do it here and now, yes?
Such a difficult choice.
Besides Helen's requirements are weird. Like how not calling her Helen Sharp is a deal breaker to her? Or not giving back money/gifts that we are given?
Nothing implies that Charles is into charity.
So why should he pretend to be something he is not to get in her pants/steal her heart?
Mary at least accepts Charles as he is. And does not give up on Charles just because we did not call her X or did not do Y.
And Charles can feel attractive and desirable when around Mary.
With Helen he can always wonder if he is losing his mojo or whether she is not cheating on him with someone else wherever her head hurts again. :P
Who cares about Helen's "prophecies". If she needs stuff such as a "prophecy" and "destiny" to open up to someone romantically then she is less trusting her heart but relies on fate to assure her that everything will go smoothly.
The story is written for Charles to favour Mary over Helen.
However, we are discussing about both girls on their own regardless of the story.
There are positives and negatives to each girl.
Mary accepts Charles for who he is simply because she needs a shoulder to lean on, especially after her former boyfriend Alan Milrow was killed by Chad(not) Capper. She is clingy and sometimes gets annoying when she keeps asking for sex, and you won't have the option to refuse in the beginning (not sure if it's related to Leadership score or sex quota, or both). However she can fight but... that's not so important in the current state of the game where you can choose 3 out of: Tichingitu, Folke, Claude, Tommy, Helen/Mary, Hercule/Longway. If you went for Knippel then 5 in total. That's still a lot to choose from.
Helen is independent in nature and loves the feeling of freedom. The reason she trusts the prophecy is because she is superstitious, just like sailors of that period. After seeing that the prophecy was fulfilled, she realised that Charles is her one.
Returning the items to Gladys is just the right thing to do, not to make Helen like you. I would return the items in real-life if I was ever placed in that situation.
She can start off with 90 nav which is pretty huge for a person like me who always plays on the highest difficulty, and she also fights well with light weapons (just watch her spam fast attacks). On top of that, getting a full ship upgrade for max 5000 doubloons without providing any strategic materials is a great plus for any captain looking to upgrade his unique ship, especially after the Saga where you earn so many doubloons.
At the end of the day, everyone has their own opinions. I would pick Mary for story, and Helen for more comfort in my playthroughs.
I was more successful with Helen than with Mary
Butcher/Hangman was a scumbag for cheating on Jessica and blaming her for his own lack of luck and good judgment.
He got his just desserts.
If Charles follows in his footsteps and cheats and abuses a girl that loves him then it would clearly not end well for him too. Whether he chooses Mary or Helen...or any woman really.
A girl can only take so much crap before snapping.
Everyone who wants to give a reasoned answer will have to wait six months and buy the new DLC.
Helen feels like only simulates emotions, but is in fact as cold hearted as a true pirate royalty can be. Besides it honestly feels good to flip her the middle finger at the end. I was sick and tired with her bad attitude, trying to do everything perfect just so I can get a single kiss once in a while. My Charles ain't a simp.
I say screw her and her island. I have 20m+ pesos invested in the "stock market", so why do i need a backwater island in the middle of nowhere anyway? My personal island is better located and it produces ironwood, so in your face.
Damn right.
Mary loves Charles while Helen just wants a henpecked husband in full simp mode.
With Mary I see her and Charles being a badass couple kicking ass through all of Caribbean, enjoying cool adventures and finding amazing treasures. All while looking lovingly at each other as they have each other's back in every situation. And lots of great sex that would make the most kinky prostitute blush.
With Helen I see her and Charles living in some big mansion with Charles having to work some administrative work as Helen forbids him from ever again engaging in piracy or any dangerous work. She might grow fat from a rich lifestyle and from her pregnancy after which she forbids Charles from touching her ever again as she sees him since then as a father of her child and not as a lover.
Because he's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on Helen without much knowledge of her value.
Given how she expects Charles to act altruistic to earn her love it seems to me that he adventure with piracy was meant to be rather short.
Once she gets her inheritance I see no reason why she cannot just become a rich businesswomen and leave piracy behind.
And expect Charles to do the same.
Of course I might be mistaken but...
