Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later??
Hey guys, i'm on my Asus laptop that uses Windows 7, i think.

My laptop isn't the best out there, and i get that. But all i want to do is install this game, and run a few body/texture mods. I've already played the hell out of this game on my 360.

I don't really care if the game runs at 19 FPS, as long as it's stable enough to do what i gotta do, that's all that matters. Because if push comes to shove, i'll run Fallout 3 in 640x screen resolution and turn the graphic details down.

Can my laptop run this good enough?

Better yet, what does "Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later" mean exactly?

It means tha it was built for windows vista. It's notoptimized for newer software. meaning some things can cause incompatibility. Meaning the game stutters and crashes a lot, but may be fixed using a program like gamebooster or by going in yourself and closing a ton of services and programs.

Thanks man. I got it working. After i downloaded it, i tried to start "New game" and it would crash saying "Fallout 3 has stopped working". I had to download this fix, some sort of .dll file, and put it in my Fallout 3 directory in steam, and it worked.

For anyone that needs help trying to get this game to work, let me know. Always willing to return the favor!

I am a lucky one. The game has only ever crashed once for me, and my frame rate is solid. Guess it is just luck of the draw really.

what seems to be the issue?

and what R5CYA provided is helpful. Sometimes, people need a "hands on" approach, or someone to walk them through.

agreed. at least 50 of the people on my friends list needed that hands-on approach. some took minutes, some took hours but just about all of them got it working by the time we were done.

you were lucky. that dll file you speak of, had to be the d3d9.dll. it's only needed for computers without a dedicated graphics card. you can check if it is, by looking in your options menu, under video and reporting what the game thinks you're using now. i bet it says nvdia. ;-)

As Fallout 3 was created prior to the release of Windows 7 and 8, it is not tested or supported on either of these newer operating systems. There are, however, a few workarounds that players can use to run the game.

First, you may be able to run it using compatibility mode. To change compatibility settings for Fallout 3:

Locate the application file for the game. This can be found in one of the following folders depending on which version of the game you use:
Retail versions: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3
Steam versions: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Fallout 3
Right-click on the application file and select Properties.
Click on the Compatibility tab.
Check the box Run this program in compatibility mode.
Choose Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the drop-down.
It may also be necessary to check the box for Run this program as an administrator.
Repeat steps 2-6 for the Fallout 3 launcher file in the same folder. It is labeled: FalloutLauncher
Run the game.

Next, Fallout 3 was not developed for use on PCs with more than two cores. If your PC has more than two cores, please also try the following steps:

Open your My Documents folder.
Under My Games, open the Fallout 3 folder and select the fallout.ini file.
In the fallout.ini file, find the following line: bUseThreadedAI=0
Change this line to read: bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it that reads: iNumHWThreads=2
Run the game.

To ensure that your system meets the requirements, please check the minimum PC specifications for Fallout 3 here: http://help.bethsoft.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9976

Please also note that we do not support game enhancement software. If you use game enhancers such as Gamebooster or Raptr, we recommend that you disable these programs while running Fallout 3.

easy to find on bethesda page....

I'm coming in late to this conversation but none of these work. I have changed to compatibility mode for XP, Changed the ini file but could not find the iNumHWThreads=2 line, disabled games for windows live, restarted the computer. Any other help would be appreciated
