RE4 have zero connection to the series
*cough cough*
You can pretty much play every RE title and still understand the plot/story as each title has minimal references to previous/other titles, which is usually explained briefly usually through cutscenes, sometimes you may get bonus content such as files or reports that explain certain events in the past i.e. manor incident of RE1 or Racoon city incident RE2.
i.e. Resident evil 4: Leon and Ada's relationship goes back to RE2
RE4 doesn't explain or go in depth in their relationship, but it makes it clear that they knew each other. So even if you didn't play RE2 you wouldn't really be lost as RE4's story doesn't revolve around Leon and Ada's relationship (Re4 is just saving ashley against saddler and his minions)
Pretty sure the ending of RE4 with leon saying ada will always be a part of him sums up their relationship. That kind of minimalist reference is there in most RE games, so yea, there is connection but not exactly big enough that would make you feel lost plot/story wise if you haven't played previous or latter iterations of RE.
It isn't something like mass effect trilogy or Lord of the rings trilogy where skipping ahead to part 2 or 3 will obviously make you question certain things. Like why is Frodo going to mordor? Why is commander sheperd's relationship with garrus?
Like i said, RE4 it doesn't go in depth into their relationship.
Anyone whose played RE2 would know that their relationship is much deeper than just as you say, a crush.
RE4's story doesn't revolve them, but it does make it clear that leon and ada were more than just aquantances. Otherwise, one would question "who the ♥♥♥♥ is that ♥♥♥♥♥?"
Using leonxAda's relationship as an example, I was jus pointing out to the OP that RE doesn't have the same kind of continuity that other games have. While there are minimal references to previous games, it doesn't really affect the plot/story of the current game. i.e. He/She won't feel lost if he/she hasn't played previous iterations of RE
Another example would be the opening of RE4 talking about Racoon city incident and Arklay hills i.e. RE2 and RE1 events. It just gives a brief summary in a form of a cutscene which sets out the plot for RE4.
Its those kind of references and connections that are present in the game, and what the OP is concerned about. Like i said, they're usually small and not so big that'l make you lost regarding the plot/story of the game hence you can enjoy the game even without having played any of the other RE title
