good game for beginners?
As per topic, is this a good game to start with for those that are showing interest in fighting games?

I realized after playing a demo of another game, that I really like these "old school" fighting games. They're simple-ish meaning there isn't too much technical stuff like special meters, different character modes, air combos, etc...

I prefer just regular fighting and not too focused on weapons and "magical" moves and this game seems to fit my criteria. But I would love to hear some input from other players.

there's three different styles, Advance (run, roll, meter charges with special moves), Extra (dash, dodge+counter attack, meter charges with damage taken+can be charged manually) and Ultimate (roll or dodge, run or dash, advanced or extra meter).

different character modes
Kyo, Terry, Andy, Joe, Ryo, Robert, Yuri, Mai, King, Yashiro, Shermie, Chris, Yamazaki, Mary, Billy and Geese have EX versions that play differently to their normal counterparts

other than SFII and older SNK fighting games this would be good enough for a beginner to play

oh dang, I guessed wrong lol there's quite a bit to this game :0

I will most likely pick this up. The physical combat itself (punches and kicks) is much more appealing to me and I can deal with all those technical stuff along the way. I'm mainly playing this for fun, but good to know this game is beginner friendly.

This is good info, thanks!

the thing i like the most about this game...is it is 3v3 but 1v1 at a time....no multi characters on the screen you are dealing with...yes there is some "Powers" some characters have and only like 5 characters that have weapons.......and this version of the game UMFE is the version they added the more tech stuff....but nothing like the more complicated new games AND combos are normally smaller then the new games that have huge 30 hit chain combos+....basically just try the differnt "Style modes" (Advenced,Extra,:Ultimate is practically a mix of Advenced and Extra) and see what you like, you can win with what ever style you want to play that is better for you....just play both Advanced and Extra and see what you like the most or MIX it up with "Ultimate" if like one thing from one and another thing from the other....i can go on but you get the just of it.

awesome! thanks for the additional info, really helpful :)

yea thats the thing with these newer fighting games, they are just so complicated and convoluted for a casual gamer like me. I cant dedicate that much time xD

The game is good for beginners.

First, the game has 3 grooves: advance and extra for the life. Ultimate (pro gamers (?)) this groove it allows you stylish of fight. dash, evasion, run, power charge etc..

Second, the gamplay is easy, difficulty es hard. very challenging

Although this game is an improved version of a rather old title, this title is actually one of the more complex KOF titles in the franchise due to its large and mostly balanced character roster as well as having the option to pick your fighting style (groove). I stand by the opinion that most of the Street Fighter games are the best games for beginners to start with though. (Most versions of the 2nd and 4th game are great to start with, 1st is too dated and clunky, alpha titles are too different from each other, and the 3rd as well as its upgrades are for pros only.)

I would suggest for this particular title that you pick a groove based on your playing style: Advanced groove is meant for aggresive players (running & rolling manuevers allow you to stay on the attack to fill the super bar!), while extra is far more useful for defensive players (dodges & charging meter allow you to use super moves more often without putting yourself at risk!). Ultimate is only a good option after you get used to the other grooves first since it lets you mix each of the previous two grooves' atributes to suit your playstyle)

Also, when choosing your character, it is a good idea to pick the ones that suit a respective groove. Characters that have plenty of combos and special moves that allow to keep pressure on opponents are best suited for Advanced groove (Kyo, Iory & Terry are a few obvious examples), while on the other hand, defensive characters with powerful normal & special moves yet with few combo options are the ones that will benefit from extra groove (Chang, Lucky & Heidern a few examples of this)

Stick to the basics at first, and you´ll find learning the game is not so difficult after all. Good luck! .)
As complicated as it is, 98UM and 2002UM are probably good games for beginners. This is because the more popular entries are filled with crazy good players who will likely discourage you endlessly. If that doesn't bother you, then the effect of the UMs is lessened.

Don't forget there is a Practice option in the menu. You can try different modes, characters and stuff to see what fits you best.

I personally like the Extra Mode, and my characters of choice are Shingo, Mature and Mai.
