To me it's like a Frankenstein. It's like...
The art vaguely reminds me to hits like Oddworld, Machinarium, or even the Neverending Story movie at some points. Some scenarios are artsy, some others are cheap, and then many of them are just downright trippy. The whole area that introduces the blue, crowned guy, for example? It's psychotropic. But that doesn't necessarily mean the game is beautiful: In the example I set, once you get through the boat stage the feeling it leaves is that of downright bizarre. 'Cause it is, more than anything, the game is bizarre in your face.
The same thing goes for the character design. There're a couple ones, like the Hunter and that bubble-head, wood-panel shoed weirdo, that are just gorgeous. Then you get the pig-guy and some ugly, arguably uninspired mobs that just speak plain, naked weird. It's like the very first time you see the Tatooine bar in Star Wars IV: You're freaked out at how full of plain weird characters this thing is.
Finally, the music has like a Zelda tint to it. But it has a grim, sleazy, fathomless feel that oozes 90s sci-fi. And the storyline is yeah, alternative, but far away from mind-blowing as well. Let's say it enables the player to discover the world and the scenarios.
What I'm trying to say with all this is that, at its peaks, the game throws in a bunch of gorgeous elements. But when you get through it, the big picture doesn't really stand out over the bizarre feeling, that's overwhelming. As a whole, I find myself uncapable of judging the game as an art piece.
Specially after I beat the game and I'm taken to the credits screen. That was like the icing to the cake, what pushed me the most to write this.
The gameplay is almost flawless, that's clear enough. But this game is plain weird.
When we set out to create Zeno Clash, the purpose was clearly to create something very bizarre... a world completely alien and unrecognizable. The game industry has relied so much on established fantasy settings and standards, to the point that dragons, wizards, orcs and elfs are no longer "fantastic"... they just feel... well... normal. If you were truly introduced to an absolutely unknown world, you wouldn't feel comfortable about how everything is. The fantasy genre has become too predictable and flat.
As a developer I'm explaining why we made this the way it is. You're totally entitled to find the game too weird and difficult to digest. You're certainly not the first person I hear this from. I'm glad you posted your thoughts here, because we often read what people's opinions and try to participate.
If the story (and many details of the game) left you with a big question mark, I'd just like to point out that the sequel (that we're currently working on), answers many unanswered questions of the first. The second game has much more explorations (isn't so linear). Anyways, thanks again for posting your thoughts here!
It looks like ZC is an embryonic project for something way bigger, isn't it? If that's the case, I hope you allow me to articulate my points beyond ZC, and refer straight to the IP itself.
The picture I get from what you're telling me and the Wiki page, is that you're trying to create something big, a completely new fantastic setting for a big RPG. But then, you're a relatively small company at the moment, and all you've been able to release so far has been a FPF within the boundaries of your own setting, that's Zenozoik.
So, correct me if I'm wrong: if you had unlimited personal and financial resources, the perfect Zenozoik game would be sort of a Skyrim in your own setting. Even if vaguely so, am I right?
Wow great post! I've always like developers who get down and talk to the community.
I love Zeno Clash a lot, but I only have one minor question and that would be if there's any reason why that I've been unable to get the Zeno Clash props, models and weapons in garrysmod 13 despite it showing up in the menu for content loading, the check box does not appear, and I only wanted to know if there was a reason for this for instance not updating the pack for garrysmod 13. This isn't a big thing but rather a very small thing. If it would take time and effort away from working on Zeno Clash II then i'd almost prefer you not try to fix it.
From, A fan.
P.S. I think the Corwids are one of the most creative and well executed concepts I've seen in a game and if it's ever possible to show them again I would love it!
Zenozoik - the game you read about in the wiki - was a failed project which we never continued, and one of it's failures was the over-ambition. The project was lacking in scope and clarity, and Zeno Clash was born out of that project when we decided to start something new. Zeno Clash 2 is not trying to be Zenozoik... that was a project we did when we had much less experience as game developers.
The story and universe of any fiction can be extrapolated to an almost infinite size, so I guess you could stretch the world of Zeno Clash to an Elderscrolls game size, but that isn't our objective.
Oh, and the Corwids are present in ZC2 ;)

The one you have to rescue from the shadows, i thought he would answer many questions, but he didn't. Why is he and the hunter connected, when you are about to die he hurts himself to save you. He actually does it twice. once with the bounty hunter and then with father mother.

Overall this was a great game.
I bought it when it was on sale (0.99$) and i don't regret it.
Everything takes inspiration from something, but most games make tributes instead of molding things into their own creations. Whatever inspired the dev team to make the game feel the way it does... it likely isn't very similar to the final product of the game itself.
I'm tired of clones, remakes, military shooters, etc. This is a breath of fresh air that has left me very pleased. I feel bad for getting it at .99c.
what an awesome game
