In fact, I hope they never add it and cancel their plans. You guys go stick with Mugen.
I would say it established a secondary community that didn´t play the game for the game itself and sadly this community got bigger than the original one.
The only good thing that came from workshop were the characters that were made with serious intent like the few workshop characters that got addet to the official game.
This is true but those are all very well known IP´s that had a big following for years.
This game has 500-1000 players ? and its still pretty new this number will probably go down before it will go up again.
While I dont know about Mortal-Combat I know that Pokemon and Minecraft have millions of players in all ages and becourse of that I think its a really bad example.
Those communitys came slowly into existence but here its more like a floodgate that gets opened.
If you look at the forums for rivals 1 you will find barely any talk about the game its all about "make this character, I want to pay for someone to make that character, who is selling sprites to make my favorite muppet."
This wouldn´t be a problem if it was not overtaking the original game and stay a small minority but there are people who absolutely don´t care for the game and only come for the workshop.
The problem is that the game got popularity for a "funny side mode" instead of its gameplay and that is a big problem simply becourse thats not what its advertising and actively working on.
Rivals is designed to be a plattform fighter and stick to its core game otherwise rivals 2 would be a costimaziable dress-up game with a fighting-mode.
If it all was just about the moeny we would probably have the dress-up game by now.
The only reason workshop should come at all is becourse at some point it will help to get more sales to let the game survive a year or two longer.
