I think this game is definitely very good, but does undeniably have some problems. I'll put them in a list:
Also, I got this game for free from a friend so :P

Positive:
+ Fun gameplay
+ Fun and Unique characters
+ Actively being updated by the developers, new character was added like a week or so ago
+ Feels somewhat like a polished, modern melee, definitely the most ""modern"" platform fighter I have played recently
+ Really fun to play with friends

Neutral:
= Some stages designs can be pretty damn bland, and some actively bad
= Updates are pretty slow for how much they actually add per update
= Low modability, unlike ROA 1
= Combos, while fun to do, are pretty punishing

Negative:
- Some Characters have really derivative movesets
- Online play is patchy at best, especially when playing against randoms
- Launched for £18 without any singleplayer campaign (Which, while I have seen worse, isn't great)
- Has a large and relatively expensive microtransactions store more fitting of a free to play game

This game is definitely still positive for me. However, it really doesn't feel like 'Rivals Of Aether 2', as a lot of the more unique aspects of the first game were completely removed to become a much more smash-like platform fighter. Unusually, and while I tend to dislike games which do this, I really think it should've launched with the Early Access tag, as as it currently is, it isn't really worth the £18/$30 you have to spend to buy it, especially with how easy emulation and piracy is. Another method would be to simply give it a lower pricetag. In a few years, maybe someway through 2026 when the content roadmap is fully added, this games pricetag could be worth it, and it's score could rise, However, its current score is:

This game lacks a casual experience as a whole. Since the launch of the game, there has been no casual experience. No fun side modes, no fun stages that force the players to adapt in meaningful ways. It's a 24/7 grind. 100% competitive with the only down time being the matchmaking and loading screens. I can't play this game or Rivals 1 with friends that are new to the Rivals experience without it just being competitive modes. I could play workshop in Rivals 1, but I didn't purchase Rivals 1 for Workshop (it didn't even exist when I bought it).

If I'm a new player, for example, and not playing with friends: I go onto an online match, go against a guy who has had 1k hours in every plat fighter ever and get bodied. What else is there to do? Tutorials on how to not get Jv4'd? That doesn't seem fun.

I think that the way the characters are designed and how the game plays is fine, but I think that I have no reason to play this game if there isn't a way to relax. It's constant grinding.

Rivals 2 is.... not Rivals enough.
It takes the direction of the series more towards your generic competitive platform fighter that ups the complexity and punishment for low skill levels.
Rivals doesn't need Grabs.
Rivals doesn't need being Grounded.
Rivals with a shield was a mistake.
Rivals with whatever "holding down to stick to the platform and drastically reduce hitstun" was an even bigger mistake.
Rivals should have kept hitstun drifting.

Part of the reason I loved the first game was how easy it was to get into the game's advanced mechanics due to how simple it all was, and compared to most platform fighters, yeah. Rivals 1 was simpler. With barely any defensive options in neutral and a fast-n-loose combo system, it all flowed together extremely well, and when you were on the receiving end of a combo, you still had options. You had massive DI angles and my personal favourite mechanic... Hitstun Drift, where you could drift left and right while you were sent flying from an attack, making trying to keep up these combos difficult but fun, since each launch was barely ever the same.
Rivals 2.... well, it's much more see your opponent hit the ground and punish them for it. DI angles are tighter, and there's no drift, making combos much more bread and butter. Because screw you for getting hit and not holding down. Screw you for landing on a platform at all. Screw you for trying to tech when you didn't get launched hard enough to tumble (a problem RoA1 does NOT have) and screw you for being new to the game.
Yeah, I was excited, but iffy when the game first came out, played it a bit, then had my criticisms. Now trying to get back into it a year later, it's torture. From better gameplay to current and expansive workshop support, just play the first game, chief... this ain't it. Funny soccer Kragg ain't worth it.
