How to counter Clarien
I've noticed that a lot of people here seem to hate fighting against clairen, and I couldn't agree more. Especially as a new player in rivals 1, fighting against her always sucked and I would like to help some of the people in that same situation.

Disclaimer: This is coming from a forsburn/wrastor main who only mained clairen as a new player. They were the first I got to diamond rank and since then I have gotten every other character there as well. Because of this, I know the least about playing clairen and only know counterplay from my experiences in ranked as other characters.

Disclaimer 2: I am not a pro in the slighest. I love the game but would define myself as a professional casual or on the higher end of middle skill players, and thats when being generous. I always go for what looks the coolest.

Disclaimer 3: I'm cracked at roa1 but suck at roa2, part of that is due to lag and the other is due to skill issue. I've also only played roa2 for 10 hours between the demo and now, so there may be some changes to clairen play styles that have shifted with the jump to 3d.

Disclaimer 4: I'm gonna dunk on clairen playstyles a lot in this forum, but don't get it twisted, clairen players can still be very skilled and can do a lot of cool things. I personally could never figure out proper spacing for the life of me.

Ok moving on, first thing you're gonna wanna do against a clairen is take it slow and figure out their playstyle. If you have a projectile, throw it out and see what they do about it. Try your best and see if you can sus out 1 of 3 different playstyles, or moves they rely on.

1. Jumps into landing aerials

This is the playstyle I see the most often, but fortunately its the most punishable. Clairen's aerials all have very easy to land tippers, and the stun is long enough and the landing lag short enough that they can combo out of this, usually with f smash. To fight against this you take the same strat you start the match with, you take it slow. Do not try to rush your opponent down and land dash attacks, you will be jumped over and you will not have a fun time. You can bait out an aerial by running in and not attacking, and then can shield or parry, and punish. When you are not stunned by the aerial, her landing lag is much more of a detriment, and you can take advantage of this. One other strat is to play a character with a large f air, like loxodont, and catch their jump. Obviously this is not a fool proof strat, be weary of short hop nairs, fake out double jumps, rising f airs, but suspect a landing aerial and be ready for it.

2. Down special

This is the most cringe of the playstyles and isn't all that common, but expect it. Turns out having an aerial parry can get you out of a lot of situations, so you may see some people mashing this out of hitstun. Easiest strat is just to bait it out. If they're mashing it out of hitstun and catching you out of your not so true combo, then expect it and stall it out.

This two different playstyles are 2 sides of the same coin, one is easily parriable, one tries to parry you. If your opponent notices what you're doing and flips the coin onto their side, be prepared to do the same right back. Matches where both of you are on this flip flop of reads are brilliant to play and watch.

These two strats are also pretty basic, once players start to get a little bit better, they may move on to

3. jab

Only reason this is reserved for "higher" level play is because the spacing is hard. Poking makes it so easy to keep opponents where you want and up tilt and f air can catch their jumps. Jab also isn't parriable, it will not stun them, so don't go for a big smash attack because they can walk away and counter punish. Best way to deal with these guys is to keep distance. Try not to get backed into a ledge and try to DI outwards. If you have to get yourself sent up in the air, do it, aerial combos are easier to get out of then jabs in clairen. Out space them, find your own fast punish that can beat out her jab. Maybe try grabbing. This playstyle is incredibly annoying to fight against and sometimes feels like bullying, but you can beat it out.

secret 4th playstyle. grab(?)

I can already foresee some of them grabbing a lot, since they can easily combo into f smash. Just do the same thing you did in the 3rd playstyle, keep distance and don't let them control what you do.

Hope this helped a little bit

Playing some more the most common Strat seems to be landing nair or dair into jab or grab. Shield the entire aerial and then either jab/grab yourself or spot dodge. Spot dodging gives you more time and is probably more consistent, but if they just jab again grabbing would have been the better option. If you try to spot dodge, be weary they may also spot dodge your punish. It’s weird.
