Temporals I think you have a point, but I think that's kind of the point as well. One or two of those in DG1 could anchor down a kill zone and shut out most enemies every level so I think they've wanted to take the focus away from them. I'm finding I need to spread out more lasers to get by with racers and rumblers now.
In Open, the Tayclon beam tower perk really helps with the racers, as well as other fast critters.
Lasers are not that effective at all anymore. Im finding Infernos do more damage and cost less.
And im increasing getting aware of how the towers will get distracted from the main threat of a lost core to shoot something thats not an imment threat across the map. I keep yelling at my towers "behind you, behind you, he's got a core you dumb F****!" Which makes this game cheesy if they dont follow the ground rules.
I love DG1, all time favorite game, played over 200hrs, only game I ever wanted to get 100% achievements but I'm not liking the cheese factor in DG2.
keep in mind that towers with the perk "target strongest and do xx% additional damage" always prefer full HP aliens entering their radius over those almost dead but with a core in their backpack.
seems that they're shooting at them (if at all) just before they leave their range again.
EDIT: for the same type of alien that is
Against racers it isn't all about damage, you should try the perks with slowing effect which are offered by some towers.
I like the lasers with the slowing perk and against racers I take a second slowing perk for another tower class (gun or cannon).
In combination with the normal temporal towers this slows down even the racers.
Map 7 has several difficult points, I'd honestly say it's perhaps the hardest map all-around, as most other maps have somewhere between 0 to 2 hard points, but I think 7 has like 4 waves that're problematic (and in my opinion Map 20 has 0, Map 20 is only special because it's one of the few maps where you can make a proper maze).
But yes, I personally find that the Tachyon Beam is the best for Lasers in general, and I typically switch between DoT and Slow Cannon. I always keep my Gun Tower on DoT, though admittedly the primary reason for that is that I have R5 DoT Gun Towers where as all its other upgrades are at R1/2.
It's just random as far as I can tell. To be precise, I still don't even have the Tachyon upgrade for Gun Towers.
Lasers are excellent against racers. When a racer is hit, it continually loses health for a certain amount of time. In combination with temporals and gun towers, it really hurts them.
Infernos are, at least in my oppinion, too weak to be of any use. In order to crush swarms, I use the mighty meteors. Teslas can also thin out herds and are very effective against shielded enemies. With the right tower item, they can also reveal invisible units.
That's why I suggested programmable towers (closest, furthest, fastest, etc.) during beta. Try Terrorhedron and you'll see what I mean. Maybe if enough people request/complain, they might add it as a toggable feature in the future.
