Better not to upgrade your towers
Similar to what trash said, I like to use the cursor to damage them at the beginning, then let my towers finish them off. If a Crasher gets through and is heading to my core housing I'll try and take him down with my cursor as fast as possible if there are no other major threats on the grid.
This is not communicated enough ingame, wasted 1.25 playthroughs to a map on the quest to geet gold to realize that you'll loose on points massively (and I thought build nearly no towers and only kill with the beam... you'll have more resources to get points)... the mode description doesn't specify it -.-
