You should be able to play together regardless as to if you own the game via Steam or Ubisoft Connect.
If you're still having issues, may we please know more about it and if you receive any error messages or codes at all?
And does this continue when completing connectivity troubleshooting[www.ubisoft.com] or reinstalling the client[ubi.li]?

sorry that you are also encountering this issue and are unable to play with your friends.
Have you tried the steps mentioned above, which were suggested by Ubi_TheBerry?
Additionally, as you have mentioned that your friends play the game on Steam and you own it on Epic Games, to rule out any possibilities, have you made sure that you have added each other on Ubisoft Connect?
If that is the case and the issue still occurs for you, would you mind providing us the error message you and / or your friends receive when trying to add each other to a lobby?
