Got it working on ubuntu 12.04 32bit with ATI HD4890 (RV790):
Download amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64.run
sudo apt-get remove fglrx* sudo apt-get install debhelper dh-modaliases execstack build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++5 dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r) sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-**-*-x86.x86_64.run --buildandinstallpkg sudo /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial
Reboot...

TF2 now run without workaround and bug!
(Finally... Good job AMD!)

Working also for me and my HD4850 512MB card. Did spectate mode in TF2 and FPS appeared to be not that bad. Was some choppiness but there were 28 players all chatting plus TF2 defaulted all the video settings to High.

I can't wait until I can start playing L4D2. That's the game I am most waiting for.

Yay!

>reboots into Linux

>fifteen minutes to download
>Firefox suddenly has forgotten out how to open ZIP file and pops up "Choose Application", basically asking me to hunt down the bin for the app manually
>how the hell should I know
>looks in Downloads folder, file not there

*sigh* OK, so apparently it was automatically unzipped into Documents for some reason, so that's one mystery solved. JulFX, will that code up in your post also work in 64 bit Kubuntu? Because I don't know what half of it means, much less how I'd adapt it.
JulFX 24 jan, 2013 @ 23:56
it should work on kubuntu 12.04, not 12.10.
sudo apt-get remove fglrx* // unistall fglrx packages sudo apt-get install debhelper dh-modaliases execstack build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++5 dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r) // install what's necessary to built a package sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-**-*-x86.x86_64.run --buildandinstallpkg // built and install package sudo /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial // configure the driver
Pedro Lobo 25 jan, 2013 @ 7:11
The Xorg and Kernel on Ubuntu 12.10 are not suported by this new driver, you need Ubuntu 12.04 (or downgrade)
cryptodan 25 jan, 2013 @ 7:18
Wished the OP posted that, now I messed up my linux install. I will have to reinstall. Had my hopes up...... :(

It's telling me that a previous install of fglrx was detected, even though I ran the remove fglrx* line. Should I risk the --force option?

If you installed from the standalone installer, try /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh .

I looked in the folder, and no such file exists. Just fglrx-install.log.

If you had installed the drivers and they broke your system, please follw the guide here. http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Precise_Installation_Guide it fixed my issues.

After installing these last night, my Ubuntu wouldn't load, I needed to added resolutions using the aticonfig, once in Steam wouldn't load complaining about XWindows stuff.

Fun times tonight.
