Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

TrackMania Nations Forever works
Whoa. TrackMania Nations Forever seems to be installable and playable in the native Linux version of Steam. It launches it under Wine – it worked with a fresh/deleted .wine tree, nothing needs to be installed in there in advance – and even the overlay works.

I have wine 1.5.16-0ubuntu1 from the ubuntu-wine PPA.

Overlay can be used with any application or game if you want to. Just add it to library.
and overlay does not work for me (cant click on overlay's buttons)

If that is a bug, it's really an awesome one. :)
disappointing. We all know wine. I hope we won't end up with wine-wrappers for half of the "linux" games, cause valve figured out many of them work ootb (more or less buggy/performant) this way.

So they now are working with WINE to make some games work ?!?

But that is not truly Native games !!!

For that i can just continue to use WINE as i did till now and with good results !!!....unless if that way games like CoDBO,etc. get somehow a performance boost because some things got optimized....

Anyone knows details about those Window$ games that instead of true native have an overlay ?

Looks like all that is required for (some) steam Windows games to work on Linux is for Steam to allow the install - the magic of the Linux Kernel takes over as far as getting Wine loaded in the right place.

All we need is an 'advanced' option that allows install of any Windows game to a Linux Steam system, if it doesn't have a native version(essentially an 'ignore platform' flag). The rest can be done by the user.
Exactly as RobbieThe1st said, maybe some config option on some kind of ~/.wine/config.cfg to allow_windows_games=1 and you will be able to install and "run" those games. I'd rather have steam installed nativetly on my machine with "wined" game to have hole "wined" steam
No, if we had an option in Steam, developers would just encourage users to flip that and buy the Windows clients… NOT the best long term strategy for Linux support.
Please all, stop being naïve, short‐sighted and selfish.

It's definitely a double edged sword. In the short term, it's going to be very difficult for many users with large libraries of Windows-only games to migrate to the native client if they can't access their games easily.

As you say though, longer term, there is a very real danger that developres won't bother with native clients, since Wine allows them to satisfy the Linux market without committing any real resources or providing any level of support.

The main problem I found about that approach is that stuff such as play on linux exists because standard wine, without anything installed, or any special settings will dramatically reduce compatibility. I think that the best way is to use native steam and for windows game use playonlinux with wined steam. Not the best looking solution but the best compatibility solution.

+1
I hope not to go too much OT, but Direct3D was always been the bad... it's just a non-standard OpenGL framework. if some software houses in past could have spent a few bucks more, at this time the OpenGL game engines would be more diffused and compatible with both Mac and Linux. For this reason, I'll always support OpenGL based initiatives.

Hey I know it's a older thread. But is this "Featur still working? Cause I get the massage "... is not available on your current platform"

wine is installed.
Yeah, I believe the ability to do this was considered a bug and was corrected at some point in the past.
