here My sum on it of the linuxs (to save people the bother)

Since the "Other" OS category had appeared prior to the inclusion of Linux stats, it's probably not a good idea to assume that it represents Linux users specifically.
It's also unclear whether non-Ubuntu distros are represented here at all. Since Steam only officially supports Ubuntu, it could be reasonable for Valve to exclude non-Ubuntu distros from survey results (if this were the case, then results would be pretty skewed).
That 0.8% of December survey respondents use Ubuntu is the only reliable information we can draw from what's available.
But yes , i do accept that only the 0.8% is the only reliable stat that we can presume
Can a 0.14% increase in the "Other" category be described as a spike? I'd like to say that it fits within the bounds of normal fluctuation, but sadly, I don't have any saved copies of previous months' data to refer to.
well ,spike might not be the prefect term but however, I cant seam to find any past os figures from steam on the web
I cant see what would incresase it other wise, however i clearly bias. If anybody has some saved stats feel free to post
EDIT : there could also me an decreased in others os and arch and feadora brough it up
however every gamer who runs linux has been dreaming of this day , i say we could hit 5% just after it offical release - that imo would be a good target
Since it's a random sample, there's potential for bias to be temporarily introduced depending on who gets prompted. It could just be that fewer people who fit into the "Other" category got prompted this time around. If "Other" is reserved for OS versions that just have low penetration (which I imagine it is), then a decline there could mean any number of things.
I've definitely talked about numbers several times before - back when there were two flavours of an OS listed as "Unknown" - but I'm having trouble tracking that down ^_^
The absence of the "Unknown" OS may also account for some percentage fluctuations.
