Xbox One and PS4
After watching a comparrison vIdeo of both next gen consoles it was said that Xbox One will be using direct X, and that PS4 will be using openGL, surely this can only be a good thing for the steam box and gaming on linux in general

But it's the same as last gen. Xbox uses DirectX while Nintendo and Sony use OpenGL.

The real great thing is that both use x86 processors, meaning easier porting to and from PC.

actually sony doesnt use Opengl, but uses PSGL which is based off opengl 1.0

edit- PSGL is highly modified for their custom architecture, but as you are correct as the new gen will use x84(_64 i believe) then the opengl for the PS4 will be really similar (maybe identical) to PC architecture

Part of the OS is based on Win8. I see no reason at all why you would run a console on ARM (the only other win8-supported architecture), so x86_64 is the only real option for MSFT. And they always used x86(_64) for the XBOXes.

Actually that isn't ture. The original Xbox did however the 360 used a Cell processor if I am not mistaken.

Neither the Wii nor the PS3 used OGL.
I don't know what the Wii uses, but it's not OGL.
PS3 uses PSGL.
Both are related to OpenGL, but not the same.

Developers say all the time that the most important aspect of consoles is that they don't have to use APIs. So DX, OGL, PSGL etc. must only be possibilities and rarely used. They probably write code for the hardware directly.

Get it straight: origial xbox: 733 MHz Intel x86 processor, xbox 360: 3.2 GHz IBM PowerPC tri-core dual-threaded "Xenon," xbox one: 8-core some AMD processor (almost definitely AMD64)

On another note it seems that MS is moving the Xbox brand away from core gaming and more to being general entertainment platform, which while bullshyte for Xbots and Xbox gamers (non fanboys) in general, might help any platform that caters to gamers and gaming more exclusively gain support.....like say the "Steambox" or even the Wii U

Xbox One Game Discs Only to be Used for Initial Installation and users have to pay a fee to install it "Xbox One games across different accounts and consoles? Well, an installation fee will be charged should a game be installed on another account" hahaha MS Fails

@Doc Holliday This and the fact that none of my Games on Demand or XBLA purchases will be transferable to the XBOne has me more interested in ever at seeing what the SteamBox will bring to the table.

I'm not impressed with either console, to be honest. Sure, they're using an AMD x86 architecture, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be any easier to port over if the architecture is completely different than any other AMD processor to date, we don't know if that'll be the case or not, but because these are consoles it just might be. Even then, I'm still not impressed, considering the standard nowdays is x64. Come on they couldn't put a 64-bit processor into a console!? The best part is, this means neither will be backwards compatible without emulation (and we know how problematic that can be), and they're BOTH using the same architecture, so Playstation 4 vs. Xbox One arguements are already partially invalid.
