All I’ve ever had to do to get games running on proton is enable it. Theres too many launch commands and tweaks floating about on things like protondb.

I guess you need to try to undo everything you’ve tweaked.

You're on SteamDeck? All supported games should work without any tinkering. I mostly pay Linux games, but I never met a problem on SteamDeck.

Did you tinker with it? If so, I'd suggest a factory reset.

Which games are you giving problems?

Apologies - I missed you have deck.
My recommendation, if you still are willing, would be to factory reset the Deck. You can switch to Desktop mode and filter by tools and search for Proton, make sure you have at least 9 and Experimental installed.

Return to gaming mode and check the properties of the game you want to launch, it should autodect Proton and launch, if it does not, try with setting Experimental under compatibility
To find out if a game is performing well or not too badly on the Steam Deck and pc on Linux go to this unofficial and unique site:

https://www.protondb.com/

They even give recommendations to succeed in making each game work and it's just as good for Steam Deck and PC on Linux.
