Which version of Proton gives the best performance, experimental or Proton 9?

All depending on the game you like to play.
Check ProtonDB[protondb.com].

I've tried a few, and they've always worked well, so I thought I'd keep the most update !
but I don't understand if experimental is more update !

As far as I know, experimental is the testing branch. You know the drill, might run more games, might break more often.

Experimental is full of half-done, untested, changes, and often has regressions; it should only be used temporarily for the occasional game that needs it until whatever fix makes it into stable.

Did I see correctly though that it's set as the default version if you don't change that?

There isn't a default option; it's disabled by default.

It's probably first in the list, though, because of sorting.

(Although first in my list is Luxtorpeda, for exactly the same reason)

Yes, but if you enable Proton, I think it's the (unreasonable) default chosen by Steam.

But it's not the default. Just first in the list.

It would probably be good if there were a default. The Deck has a "Proton stable" that just tracks the latest stable version rather than any particular-numbered version, and that would be sensible to both have in the list and to be the default value regardless of sorting.

What do you think happens if I enable Proton for all games but don't touch the versions box?

Yes please!

As I said, when I do that I get Luxtorpeda. That's why it's not a default; just an accident.

What I get when I don't choose anything (and don't install anything) is the de-facto default. Hope there's a bug reported.

Per default Proton is disabled... however when you activate it then the Experimental is on top of the list so that's the one that will be installed first of all... so technically you could say that is the default...

This thread has gotten so weird - must be my cue to chime in. Gotta say Zyro sees it from my pov. OK, technically[xkcd.com], it isn't the default - just at the top of the list, and is what you get if you don't make a choice...

WarnerCK and me agreed an everyhting except the term though. You get the first on the list if you don't choose anything, this is bad, there should be an explicit default, and the best one would be something like "Latest Proton Stable".
