Steam for Linux

Witcher 3 on Linux
I tried running the Witcher 3 via Proton 5 and the game won't even launch. Steam will just show that game is running and it will automatically stop it in a few seconds. Then I tried to run the game using Proton 4 and that just gave me a black screen. Any help to fix those issues and to get game running is highly apriciated.

My system:

OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Processor: 9th Generation Intel Core i5 9300H | 4 Cores/8 Threads @ 2.4Ghz~4.1Ghz
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5
NVIDIA Driver Version: 440.59

Game is installed on my NVME(EXT4) drive.

There seems to be a regression with Proton 5 https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/607#issuecomment-613333539

Try to start the game using another version of Proton. Go the the game properties, Force specific Steam Play compatibility tool > Select another from the list.
4.11 seems to work.

I'm running W3 from an Ext4 HDD with an NVidia GTX1050Ti (440.82 drivers) using Proton 5, but am using Manjaro (Arch) with Gnome. Game seems to run a bit faster with Proton 5.0.7. Have been dabbling in New Game Plus and everything seems to be fine. Game saves from my Windows days with the game work without issue.

Your drivers should be fine and Proton 5 should not be an issue.

Try the following:
1. Start the game.
2. Switch to another virtual desktop and wait until the game loads.
3. Switch back to the virtual desktop running the game.
4. Once in the game adjust your video settings (in-game settings).

It should start normally after that. Had the same issue - just remembered what the solution was. Let me know if it works for you. It's about the weirdest crap I've ever ran into, but really easy to correct.

i love linux but when it comes to games, why dont just get win10? dualboot with manjaro is shown as a option.

My games run better in Linux. DOOM 2016 crashes consistently for me in Windows, but does not in Linux - on the same hardware. I also run Witcher 3 at higher graphics settings with less frame drop (same for DOOM) and I'm talking almost max graphics.

I have Windows 10 Pro and do not game in it much at all any more. I'm not anti-windows, it's just that Manjaro became my gaming O.S. I also use FreeBSD - yeah, I triple boot believe it or not.

Some folks are simply poor, frugal or just like using alternatives to Windows; me, I've been using Linux over 20 years and have dual boot just as long. My first experience with Windows was 3.1 (DOS), so I'm old.

It's cool though Wednesday.

From my experience, P5 doesn't work well on Ubuntu 18. You need Ubuntu 19, and i recommend Ubuntu 20 for gaming.

Try using the -windowed flag in launchoptions. Linux have problems with fullscreen when playing trough proton sometimes.

Though it boils down to the DM & WM combination in that case.

Are other Proton games running well? And more specifically, other games needing DXVK>Vulkan? You could try forcing WineD3D on it, just to help test if the issue is related to DXVK.

Is it a multi-monitor setup? In a recent thread the issue was Proton doesn't aways get it right (or rather it defaults to display:0 no matter what), and might crash or go black due to it.

Are you running your Ubuntu session using Wayland or X.org? (I'm not even sure how this is going for Ubuntu users now, as Linux Mint still only has X.org, but maybe...)

And with 20-years of Linux on your back, I wouldn't imagine you missed proton requisites and such, but may be worth doublechecking a couple things (see item [4]):

I have no problem with most games on steam.

If I wanted to use Windows then I'd be using Windows, lol

i keep both 4-11 and 5.0x installed

.... as for witcher ive heard it works flawlessly
however, i have not yet tested w3 on protoon sadface.

(i have the GOG goty version)

My game drive is: USB 2.0, Ext4, 7200 RPM, 32MB Buffer; 1TB HDD (Fujitsu Travelstar). It's a desktop drive that I put into an external USB enclosure; it runs really well, but would definitely benefit from a USB 3.0 enclosure without a doubt.

What's your HDD speed?
I'm guessing 5400 RPM with a 16MB buffer.

I think this is the first Proton game I tried. I played Long Dark and CSGO but I think they have native Linux support. Can you suggest Any small size proton game so I can test.
I am not using a muti-moniter setup. I use X.org.

@OP: Hardware specs and drivers seem to be in order. Have you tried using PROTON_LOG to see why it isn't launching?

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton#runtime-config-options

ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/USER/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.

I saw lot errors like this on logs.
thetargos May 2, 2020 @ 8:55pm
Those ELF errors are normal when running a 64-bit game, likewise if you run a 32-bit game, you get those for the 64-bit lib, basically you cannot load one in the context of another (32-bit Vs 64-bit)
