Is Linux Mint good for gaming?
I have seen mainly people use Ubuntu and mGame. But wondering if Mint is good too?

For me, I don't have any problem. I use Linux Mint 19. Actually I playing to Dishonored with Steam Play. It work well.

performance wise all Linux OSes work in same manner, what is different is user interface and set of default apps one would get by installing particular OS. Ubuntu and Mint are similar in a way they tailored for beginner Linux users. Don't ever ask what is the best because you will get very biased replies :) Watch video reviews, showcases, demos of desktop etc, pick up distro you like better by visuals and by workfow.

I have used Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3, 18.0/.1/.2/.3 and now 19 and I have played a lot of games. I am satisfied. But understand that Mint is the same as Ubuntu, so it performs quite the same. Try to discover your taste!

All the Linux distros are equally good. Just pick one that you enjoy using.

The only difference is with really marginal hardware: some desktop environments have more going on than others. If your hardware is capable of gaming it is also capable of gaming with any desktop environment.

Thank you for the helpful replies. Currently I game on Windows 10. Is just that after steam announced proton I'm thinking about jumping ship once it comes out beta since I'm just getting fed up with Windows always need to update. I enjoyed 7 and 8.1, and while 10 is good for the most part it's just become more annoying that with every update they break something.

Yeah. Mint works great most of the time. The only problem I've had at times is using a controller. But that seems to be a Steam exclusive problem since the controllers more or less always worked for the OS itself. Also Bluetooth.

As a System Admin of thousands of Red Hat servers by day, I use Mint at home. Each distro has its use case - Gargoyle/OpenWRT for the router; RasPi's have theirs; Ubuntu has always been great. However, Mint eliminated a lot of work I had to do for Ubuntu. Mint gave me time back.

For example, a minor one - Codecs. Mint - they're there vs Ubuntu - you have/had to install them from restricted.

A tougher example - USB monitors. Uhg - DisplayLink. Ubuntu - get the green screen, go mess with xorg.conf, etc (a PITA wrestling match) vs Mint - plug in my USB monitor, it's live with a Desktop. re-arrange as you see fit. Oh you want two, plug it in. Why not a 3rd as well -- automagical. (yes, I've 2 15" and an old 7").

Mint is an enhanced, user tailored Ubuntu LTS. I still wear my Ubuntu baseball cap (literally), but Mint make everything effortless after a long day wrestling bare metal or a bunch of VM servers.

Just make sure if you do jump on board the Linux train, be sure you partition your drives accordingly to avoid unnessary re-installs (i.e. make /home its own partition or drive given that Steam will want to live in your $HOME/.local/ directory)

I find Linux Mint is a bit better for people coming from windows, because it is more familiar (much like win7) and because its main focus is keeping the user experience stable (so no revolutionary surprises, just gradual improvements) and well polished (*very* well polished to the minutest detail).

It is always catering for unexperienced users, both by keeping all it can preset/automated (as stated in previous post) and by making its UI explain things that involve user choice/interaction (without nagging and without robbing important choice from users, like setting up an auto-backup strategy with "timeshift").

Other distros have their own strong points and you will eventually get to know them and judge if their are better for your needs, but as a first attempt at Linux in general I very much reccomend Linux Mint. (I use it too, ever since escaping the dawn of win10 nagging on win7)

Welcome to Linux :steamhappy:

Mint 19 is a solid choice - easy - stable :)

Funny thing is that the other day I gave an old laptop to a friend of mine who needed one. It was slow so I installed Linux Mint on it and I was impressed on how much faster it was after a boot up was a lttile slow for the first few minutes.

a bit slow on thr first few minutes of the first boot?

not really surprising, probably just a few things needed to be done in the background like building caches for a lot stuff

much lighter than windows, right? :)

hint: use all parts of the "mint-y dark" theme, it's incredibly beautiful

Mint is one of the best. It draws from the stability and curation of ubuntu and debian and sets you up with huge cross-section of codecs and libraries (debian is rather staunch about not including non-free / closed stuff. Mint is the exact opposite). It also has a really clean and easy desktop environment with Cinnamon and its driver manager and update manager make maintennance really simple. (all that said, however, I do desire to migrate to debian sometime in the coming months for the rolling updates... I still haven't gotten around to install mint 19 and would rather avoid the major/minor/short-term/long-term release concepts and go to a fulling rolling distro)

When you say can't install you mean the option is not available?

which game?

if it's a windows exclusive, you'll need to enable Proton on Steam settings before that option shows.
