How to get Minecraft working under Steam in Linux
I have followed this tutorial

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/howto-minecraft-with-the-steam-controller-on-linux-desktop-and-steamos.6213

and have added Minecraft to my Steam menu. I can choose it from the Big Picture Mode Games but when I pick it, it opens up the minecraft launcher in a separate window and I lose the controller support.

The whole reason for adding Minecraft to Steam library is to use the controller. I have my controller working perfectly in other Steam games.

I'm still a bit of a linux noob so i think it might be something silly. Any ideas?

I don't know what kind of magic they did in SteamOS, but Minecraft launcher opens full screen and focus is retained when launched from the BPM.
Oh, btw, Minecraft with the Steam Controller is awesome.

IMHO, on SteamOS the controller support probably works even when BPM is out of focus, no matter what software is running

on normal linux distros you can search for some launch parameter that might help keep focus where it has to be...

...and there is SC Controller, which implements systemwide support for the steam controller (and others) through its alternative config interface (meaning it won't exactly work like steam game controller configs, but you'll be able to do some customization too).

It works for me on Ubuntu. The only setup thing that was odd was having to leave the launcher window open when you launch the game rather than letting it automatically close. I can confirm that Minecraft with the Steam controller is awesome.

Are there any configuration options in the menu I should check? I've had them all checked and back again so i'm not sure which are right and which aren't. It's not a Steam controller but an Nvidia Shield working as an XBox360.

AFAIK, the only way to use a controller other than a Steam controller in Minecraft is to map your controller buttons to keypresses using external software. You can use a Steam controller with Steam because it's able to handle that mapping itself.

if you install the deb file from the official minecraft website on a debia like distro you just add it as non-steam game

I have the game installed as a non-steam game and the controller works great for other non-steam games too. It seems to leave the big picture mode and go to the minecraft launcher which loses the controller support.

Other people say it works perfect with the steam controller.

Anyone know how to add prism launcher to steam on linux?

1. install it
hint: check if it's available from your linux distro's repositories before grabing a copy from prism's website (same idea as installing from google play store instead of downloading an .apk)
https://prismlauncher.org/download/linux/

2. in steam library, there is an option to add a 3rd-party game/app to the library, and you should be able to select prism launcher from the list of available linux apps if already installed
