Doom 2016 Working better than in Windows TRULY! and easy to install
Just go to this website where Sttrider from Lutris helped me iron out a few wrinkles.
https://forums.lutris.net/t/doom-2016-working-on-ubuntu-gnome/584/14

I am not new to Linux but new to Lutris and it is not completely user friendly without a little bit of experience, so the tips may help a lot of others as I went through the learning curve with simple answers by Strider.

He is aswesome

Enjoy, and say goodbye to M$:steamhappy:
Mark
p.s and thanks Strider for his help too!!

Nice ty :) u get more fps on Linux ?
ack0329 Jun 9, 2017 @ 5:21pm
more fps, better blooming/Ultra Graphics, and in Window it palyed it with a weird X through the screen (screen tearing) which I thought was a Linux issue! But not in Ubuntu-Gnome.

Also working flawlessly on my brother ASUS gaming laptop where I installed it with a simple click from Lutris's website, I was not so lucky but learned a fair bit in the process.

And thanks FP for your thanks!:steamhappy:

Haha great to hear that and impressed by the fix of the tearing!
What CPU / GPU do you have ?
You are comparing with Win 7/8/10 ?
thetargos Jun 9, 2017 @ 5:40pm
Hegemonically, OpenGL games usually run as fast or even faster on Linux wine than on Windows... Dunno what may be the overhead in Windows.

I'm not sure about OpenGL, but Vulkan most certainly worked great for me with the game.

I didn't know Vulkan passthrough was working in Wine already.
Nice. I'm not familiar with Lutris, so I'll be exploring a bit. Thanks for the info! :AwesomeBorn:

You are VERY WELCOME!
and Lutris (which is open-source) uses the same files as Codeweavers which asks for you to pay monthly, and POL is getting old and has no updates for 2 years - so Lutris is AWESOME! NOW!

after a bit ofgetting used to it
and here is my cut and paste from tomboy notes to get it work
in the next post (let me update it)
ack0329 Jun 9, 2017 @ 7:03pm
here are some notes (if you try to install it with Lutris they will make sense
Cheers, Mark

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Linux
∘ Runner Options (nothing their)
∘ System Options
‣ Restore Desktop Resolution when game quits (ONLY)
• all else default or Off
• Steam - Configure
∘ Runner Options / nothing checked
∘ System Options / SAA
• Wine
∘ Manage Version
‣ add Wine Staging 2.8 64-bit
∘ Runner Options
‣ System 1.6.2 (default) (Yes keep this in HERE! Seemingly Dumb but works)
• I don't now why Lutris installed this version but it can be upgraded to a newer one, (32-bits seems to be needed and worked for me though,)
• note: in "Steam Wine" of course 64 wine staging 2.6 or later.
‣ all esle default
∘ System Options / SAA
• Wine Steam / Configure
∘ Runner Options
‣ choose 2.8 staging 64 for Doom (change it from System 1.6.2)
• Also this makes the blank steam page fixed)
‣ Virtual Desktop 1080
‣ Custom Wine "None"
‣ Mouse Warp Over-ride - Force
‣ Strict Draw Ordering Enabled
‣ Output Debug - Enabled
∘ System Options / SAA
• C/
• D/ Also note that installs in ~/.local/share/lutris/runners/winesteam/prefix and NOT in "prefix64" as one would expect
• E/ the "check - Disable "Process Monitor" is indeed in "System Options" BUT almost invisible to me (or STUPID ME) but for others .... one needs to scroll down past a large gray blank area which I ASSUMED was the end of the "Page", but no there are a dozen or so more options which had the aforementioned ...
∘ "Disable process monitor"

∘ Steam
• Wine steam login has blank prompts
‣ Your version of wine is to old!
‣ Go in Manage Runner -> Wine Manage Version
• Use the latest (2.7)
∘ I would suggest using whatever is the latest version of Wine Staging available, even if there's a more recent wine version.
‣ (That would be Wine Staging 2.6 as of now)

Indeed and without a problem, just go into Advance Options in the game and select it OpenGL/VUlkan either

Too bad it's still a Windows-only game. Also, the performance isn't really "better" on Linux from the benchmarks I saw:

Looks like Windows Vulkan vs. Linux (Wine) Vulkan is about the same while OpenGL performance is slightly better on Windows.

Trust me on my rig both with NVidia 388.22 both with Vulkan both Ultra/ 1080p and NOTHING different
Windows LESS Attractive and 30-45 fps and tearing
Ubuntu-Gnome pegged at 60 most of the time occassionaly dippiong to 50-55 no tearing

and believe it or not better BLOOMING EFFECTS (and NVidia geforce experience coiuld NOT compare)

Staggering I know, but it is finally what we have been waiting to here!
A game written with OpenGL/Vulkan in mind SHOULD run better in LINUX
and finally the PROOF / just imagine it WITHOUT WINE! - perhaps that's exactly why they won't release a Linux version because they are clearly (Bethesda) in bed with M$ and this is the proof the WORLD has been waiting for ever since Vulkan has arrived.

Spread the word! the last reASON TO STAY IN WINDOWS IS FADING FAST1 ... GAMING

This may be a game-changer indeed!

here are some notes for Strider to help improve Lutris - feel free to add to it for his benefit as he says he welcomes trhis and is putting together Lutris 5.2! WooHoo, And he does LISTEN!

Lutris Improvements
‣ When I clicked install from your website it:
∘ 1/ Installed wine 1.6.2 making (as you now steam login entries greyed out and unusable for most users. I had wine-devel in my computer so it wasn't from my side.
∘ 2/ It complained that it was not a 64-bit wine version
• and indeed the "Steam Wine" was also set to wine 1.6.2. This can confuse anyone.
• which one to upgrade to a 64-bit version (well now I know it's needed ONLY in "Steam Wine", NOT in Wine. This can CONFUSE ANYONE!
• and Perhaps Wine needs to be 32-bit- I still don't know., but I upgraded it "Wine" to to NON-Staging 2.9 64-bit and all worked well.
∘ 3/ You should (in my opinion) have a users guide - and I sure could have used one, but cold NOT find one ANYWHERE in 20-30 web searches. It could really help!
∘ 4/ Also note that installs in ~/.local/share/lutris/runners/winesteam/prefix and NOT in "prefix64" as one would expect. Perhaps worn newbies about this.

I hope this helps, Mark

Wine has little overhead on OoenGL (and apparently Vulkan as well) games. In the old days it was negligible.

I call bullsh*t here lol with your Windows result Ack0329, sounds more like a lack of you not knowing how to configure your game, etc in the Windows version. Considering I've run the game with a VFIO virtual machine running Windows and native Windows, and also in Linux with WINE the results are practically the same across all three ways of playing it with Vulkan or even OpenGL.
