Can't change the resolution in the config file, I get the black screen if I do it in game

The title pretty much explains it, if I go above 1440x900 resolution in the game settings, I can't start the game and get the black screen. If I change the resolution in the config file t my native resolution (1600x900) and save it, nothing happens, it just starts at 800x600 resolution.
