Workarounds if the game doesn't start
Hello,

we know that some users are experiencing issues when launching the game. The main one seems that on some systems the game can't find the appropiate Java version.

So, to solve this, first uninstall all the old Java versions you have on the system. After that, you can install the newest Java build (you can get it from http://www.java.com ).

If doing that doesn't solve the issue the next step should be to upgrade your graphic drivers. To do that, you need to know what graphic card you have and then visit the manofacturer website. On that website you should be able to download the lastest drivers for free.

If the game still doesn't start, please, check the game folder for an error.log file, it should contain an error message with a description of the problem.
If the error.log file contains a message saying "Pixel format not accelerated", we can't do much to solve it, it means that your graphic card doesn't support some game graphic functions :(

I hope that this post helps you!

Edit: Some users can't launch the game because the Windows UAC. This will be solved on the next patch. In the meanwhile, to play the game, you can go to the game folder (STEAMFOLDER/steamapps/common/towns) right click on the launcher (the file with a pickaxe icon) and select "Run as admin".

Kind regards
Xavi

Game Nov 14, 2012 @ 10:13am
I've played this game for several hours now and have yet to encounter a single bug. There are a few game mechanics that are kind of clunky, like having to manage how much flour is produced and such, but nothing game breaking.

It's nice to see that you are working to solve problems to get the game working for those who are getting errors with thier system though. After you get past the semi-steep learning curve at the beginning of the game it becomes quite addictive.

Is there currently any way to set your soldiers or heros to explore new territory underground once you've opened up a dungeon? I couldn't find anything.

Thank You

...graphic functions? Towns? Please tell me you're joking, this game has very simplistic graphics.

It plays on my few-years-old gaming rig, but on my old desktop, no dice. I'm kind of miffed to be honest, it looked a simple little game that any old PC should be able to have a bash at.

But meh, it plays on my main computer and it plays really well. I love it, it's like Dwarf Fortress only without the grinding :D

What do I do about this?

Should note the Desura version works fine for me, and running the .exe in the folder works fine for me, it's just the Steam directory that isn't working at all.

Probably java problem (or in rare cases steam/windows)
Try this:

-uninstal all java versions that you have, and than instal the last version of java (sometimes there are more different java's installed at the same time, go to control panel than add/remove programs (for win xp) to be shure that you uninstalled every version of java). Be sure that you uninstalled all versions of java, check all the programs you have installed. Also when instaling java if you use 64bit OS, instale java for 64bit system.

That seemed to fix the problem but I literally did that same thing a few days ago for a completely unrelated problem. I hate java so much. -_- Thanks for the response though.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java, and updated my graphics drivers just in case. What happens is that the game suddenly and without warning shuts down in the middle of play. The store page says nothing about not running on 64-bit windows so I am concerned about having paid for a game that I don't seem to be able to play.

EDIT: for the record I'm enjoying the game and see a lot of potential, I'm just not happy with all the crashes so far.

I saw a lot of this type of errors in minecraft also, and same things, game crashing after random time, or will not start at all with same errors. It is problem with java and gpu drivers... I really hate java. You tried both things, so maybe say what gpu you have and the version and date of drivers that you installed so maybe towns support can find a better version of drivers for you. What OS are you using? Do you have all service packs installed for win? Are you using 64bit OS, did you instal 64bit java for it? How much RAM do you have? More info about your system the better.
But il say it again, I really hate java from moment I played minecraft and had a lot of similar problems. In the end I used total different drivers for my gpu to make it work.

Hi, that seems to be a graphics card driver issue. Please identify your card, then head to the manufacturer's website and download directly from there - windows update isn't reliable. :)

I see we fully got a support section over here.
Well makes my job of helping easier.

"Pixel format not accelerated" error can be fixed by opening devive manager, display adapters, right click to update, search computer for drivers, list known drivers (no download needed), and install a previous driver. Works to get Minecraft running again as well. Using AMD Radeon 3k, de-dated to Februarys drivers. Hope this helps!
