It comes with cd-key, I could activate it in my linux install as well (although outside of Steam). If you didn't receive a key contact Steam Support

I think I found out why they stopped giving the keys. This is due to the new packaging done by Bethesda for this game as of patch 1.4. Very stupid way of thinking they have but well.
I still think you should ask Steam Support for it. The more people ask for it the better. And it's better to ask them for Linux Support now that there's a native Steam client out there.

Hey, this is probably a really late reply, but I just ran into this issue after I bought Quake 4 on sale today. I got around this by running Quake 4 in Wine once. Afterwards, it generates a "quake4key" file in SteamApps/common/Quake 4/q4base. Copy that to ~/.quake4/q4base in Linux and it will validate your Quake 4 Linux install.

NOTE: The Steam Quake 4 assets are not compatible with the Linux version. I copied the assets from an old Quake 4 disk (a copy I unfortunately lost the CD key for).

The assets can be found in id software's website I think. At least they were available some time ago, don't know if Bethesda ruined that as well.

I don't think they ever released the actual game data files. Just the Linux-specific files (installer)

Mmmmm I remember installing the game on linux after I bought it on Steam (I never got the retail disc for it). Maybe I got them elsewhere. Or was it DOOM 3...?

@Urikawaki. You might have been able to install it before Bethesda updated the game.
@OzZy. You can download an iso from torrent, then use the quake4key file to legally validate your linux install. That's what I did. Works nicely, barring some PulseAudio issues. But yes, native Linux version on Steam would be totally awesome.

well i bought the game true but the 21 not 20 , char cdkey that steam puts in the win q4base folder is not going to work on linux , where and why da hell they removed quake4 CD-key LINK from right menu in windows ? IT ONLY works in linux but if you ask to generate the key and copy it to clip board doesnt give us nothing .... no LEGAL soluction yet to play quake4 under linux until it stays native ! gl hf

The quake4key file works for me. I simply copied it into my .quake4 folder

Its been linux native from the start ... come on ID or bethesda or whoever it is ... hire TTimo back and do the minimal amout of work to get it working with steam on modern distros. Same goes for doom3, etqw and prey. You guys used to be such great supporters of linux gaming and now you are chucking in the towel just when linux on the desktop finally arives (thanks steam).
