How to fix Quake 4 launching on Win 7/8 (Solution)
1. Rename Quake4.exe to Quake4.bin
2. Create batch file run.bat and put in following strings:

start Quake4.bin +set fs_game_base q4base
exit

3. Save batch in one dir with the renamed Quake4.bin.

If you want to launch mods, etc - use, for example:

start Quake4.bin +set fs_game_base gtxq4
exit

gtxq4 - is dir with the mod.

4. Always run the game from the run.bat

Gonna print this tip out and save it, would probably work for other older games. Good clean fix, thanks.

Why cant you just make the .exe compatibility set to XP Operating system?

That works well a lot of the time, but it has it's issues too. I keep a dual boot with xp sp3 and 7, I like my older games.
